When the 4 Pac 12 teams join the B1G will their be 3 six team divisions or 2 nine team divisions?

The divisions were suppose to go away in 2024. Now with the additions in the West, there maybe divisions set up. I don’t think there has been serious discussion or decisions made yet.

If 9 conf games, 1 annual opponent and play the other 16 once every 2 years is my guess.

I don't think there will be divisions even at 18. They said it'll be about the same with a few tweaks. If they ever get to 20 or more (which I think will eventually happen) then I think divisions might come in play again.

Paywall but an excerpt:

The league will use the same Flex Protect Plus model it created for football scheduling after adding USC and UCLA and simply adjust it to incorporate new members Oregon and Washington. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti told The Athletic that “divisions don’t really work” for multiple reasons.

“They’re very difficult to balance because they’d have to be large,” Petitti said. “And secondly, if you’re playing nine conference games and you’re breaking into divisions, you’re playing so much against your own division that you’re not really crossing over. The inability to see other teams and really connect the conference is not ideal. So, there’s a competitive aspect to it, but there’s also a practicality.

“We want our members to see each other as frequently as we can make it happen. The system that we have does that. Divisions would make that way more complicated.”

No reason to do divisions. You can do anything you want with scheduling without having divisions. Just as PSU had no dedicated annual game while others had more than 1. You know all 4 PAC teams will play each other every year to minimize travel-but don’t need divisions

No, Don’t think the 4 west teams will play each other every year because that would create scheduling imbalance across the conference. Maybe one protected game per year, not three.

Only fair way to accomplish that would be for all other teams to get multiple protected games too, which undermines the goal of all teams playing each other as often as possible

There won’t be a uniform number of protected games. It can be different for everyone from as little as 0 to as many as 3. It’s just like the former schedule with a few tweaks because of the addition of Oregon and Wash.

right, but I don't think the 4 west coast teams will get 3 protected games while the rest will get considerably less. can't have completely unequal rotations.

Don’t know about 3 but I think 2 is possible for any or all of them. The northwest schools one from Cali and the Cali schools one from the northwest.

Maybe UCLA Wash and then Oregon USC as the 2nd protected.

Fair point. Possibly 2. 3 would mean a third of their conf schedules are fixed and less frequent legacy b10 opponent scheduling. I doubt it.

New divisions for 2024. Here is the RU division:

Rutgers
Maryland
Penn State
Michigan
Ohio State
USC
Oregon
Wisconsin
Iowa.

Interesting geography - coast to coast with dairy, GM, and corn in the middle.
RU better fire-up those NIL engines.
RIght now I believe GS still wouldn't beat WV.

I've heard they're going with nine 2-team divisions...
They’re not. They’ve said it before and the commish has said it again now in the articles I posted above.

They’re using the same flex protect model they already rolled out, just with some tweaks for Oregon and Washington.

Edit: joke slipped by me 😂

I've said before I'm guessing with a 9 game schedule, 1 protected game and play every other team every once every 2 years.

yes, was only disagreeing with the suggestion the 4 west coast teams would have each other as protected games....3 protected games each. I don't think that's gonna happen.
