We have trouble with Mich so do we try anything different? Maybe Paul at the top of the key distributing. If they blanket Spencer try subbing in Palm or Reiber and exploit a size advantage. Paul or Caleb backing down smaller defenders. The whole offense becomes picks for Spencer and he does the majority of the shooting, as Zap suggested. Zone D to avoid 1/1 with their quicker guards. We need to try something different or the result is very likely the same.

Do you honestly expect anything different? We haven’t set picks for our only shooter all season. Totally expect more of the same.

Spencer needs to take more shots for sure.. but backing down smaller defenders is a strategic problem because teams have been packing the paint against us and can get away with it because we lack good outside shooting. I think our only paths to victory are hoping that Simpson can get into the paint and dish and/or hitting a lot more outside shots in this particular game.

well we have to combat their pressure that killed us last time. Need more back doors when they overplay us and limit the dribbling. When simpson is in; id spread the floor or do some high pick and roll . This can get their bigs into foul trouble . Also need to level them on screens a few times when they pressure us. We have to attack their drop coverage

Play good defense...hope some of their shots rim out...hope more of ours drop for a change. Hopefully, the gods think we're due to catch a break. I know this is not very enlightening but it'll do the trick. Hey, it's Michigan..I hate these guys...and I don't like Howard or his family...and I never liked the Fab 5...and I still think we would have beaten them 9 times out of 10 in 1976 lol! Go RU!

Everyone wants to see more Simpson but his worst game post Mag was probably the Michigan game. He didn't handle the pressure well at all. Might need to see him and Paul at the same time bc Simpson really struggling trying to run the offense against them

The name on the front of the Jersey doesn’t play the game. Series records are completely irrelevant.
it's not just the UM record but our pitiful scoring over the last 8 games that would suggest a change..but since that hasn't happened with the exception of more Simpson..

ps, you need to remind our players that too. Because there apparently is a mental aspect to their play.

He can't run any offense against them (despite what others think we do run offense) he has to just put his head down and get to the hoop. Usually bad advice but that's what he can do right now.

This 100%. Simpson’s A game is transition and this isn’t the likely match up for it to lead the way. Our chances really boil down to Paul snapping out of it and playing a much better game than he’s played in weeks. If Paul looks like he has in the past 3 games, we’re in big trouble.

This game is very reminiscent of 2020,

#30 2020 19-11, 4-9 5-1 3-1 7-0, H 17-1 R 2-8 N 0-2
#43 2023 18-13, 5-6 4-3 2-4 7-0, H 14-5 R 4-7 N 0-1
2020 1/2 9-10, 1/2/3 12-12, 2023 1/2 9-9, 1/2/3 11-13
2020 Mich at MSG game was neutral, only home loss Mich.
Hopefully, the Ohio St controversy is considered, make a big difference in resume flipping a Q1 loss to a win.

#24 UM(2020) 19-12, 6-10 5-2 2-0 6-0, H 11-5 4-7 4-0
#54 UM(2023) 17-14, 3-11 5-2 5-0 4-1, H 12-4 3-7 2-3
2020 11-11, 13-11, 2023 8-13, 13-13 & Q4 loss

Obviously Michigan was a lock that year and only bubble this year, but it is 8/9 all over again

stopped reading @ second sentence "Paul at the top of the key distributing". Was "Cliff shooting threes from the corner" in your list ? How about "Jaden Miller posting up Dickenson" ?

I’m worried how bad it can get today. I’m hoping for the best. Michigan just has our number and the matchup sucks for us.

It’s odd - fast starts seem to have been a curse for us of late. The only games we didn’t break out to an early 7+ point lead in were Wisconsin and PSU. Not sure what to make of that… Maybe just a coincidence but odd.

Not expecting big game from Paul, he's gotta be hurting

Caleb has to find his midrange (organically - not when momentum starting to go Michigan's way and he forces a shot soon as they cross mid court)

And would like to see Cam take some 23 - 24 footers when he has a good look, no matter where clock is at. Such a struggle to get to 60, so few Shooters, need to see some selfish from him. If he misses, is it really worse than most shots we get?

I think they're a better matchup for us WITH Jett.
Without him they move the ball better and get more open 3's - our weakness
With him, Caleb has someone to stop which maximizes Caleb's value
Not sure about that, but remember Caleb also didn’t start and only played 26 minutes last time. It was the game after the one he missed with back spasms.

This is significant for us because it meant Oskar played 25 minutes and Hyatt also played 28 minutes and didn’t score. If Hyatt has a better game (can’t really be worse) and Caleb absorbs some of Oskar’s minutes, that alone will be a major upgrade.

Note that Paul actually didn’t play that bad in the Michigan game. I’d sign on the dotted line for that version of him (in place of the one from the last few games).

I agree. Force up some shots Cam. Please!
Has he taken many deep 3's? I can't remember any, seems like he's always right around the line. Spacing a step or two behind the line makes a huge difference if you can knock them down from there.

Reasons to be optimistic:

- This is the first team we've played a SECOND time with our new-look rotation. Hopefully this means Pike and the team have a full game's worth of tape/experience to know what did/didn't work last time, and can make some changes
- We had our season-worst performance at the FT line last time, which hopefully means we're closer to our season average today
- Hyatt had a rare 0-fer last time out, only his 2nd all season
- McConnell only played 25 min last game, his first back from missing Wisconsin due to back spasms
- Last time we gave up 13 turnovers, several unforced, and Michigan only had 9. Hoping we see a better +/- in the turnover department.

Last time out, Michigan struggled offensively - in part because of our defense, and in part because they were just off. But we also struggled to put the ball in the hoop.

I have a feeling this game is going to be decided at the 3P line and the FT line - if we can get hot from the arc (and actually use Palmquist as the 3P specialist he is), that can free up Omoruyi to work 1v1 on Dickinson and hopefully get him into foul trouble.

Michigan hasn't been consistent this year, either - so let's hope we do better playing in the new arena and new floor than they do.

I've blocked time on my calendar for an "important meeting" and will I'm sure be shouting at the television.

As I said - we don’t necessarily need a “BIG” game from Paul - he just can’t be completely awful. I’d be okay with his output from the last Michigan game - 9 points, 6 assists (to 2 turnovers), 3 boards and a steal.

The final NW stats don’t tell the story of how bad Paul truly was. In the first 31+ minutes of the game Paul was 0-7 with 0 points and 3 turnovers (to 3 assists). Can’t have that from our PG. Let’s hope he can build on his last 8-9 minutes vs. NW. he played better down the stretch.

Agree with everything you said, except I’m not expecting much from Oskar. I’m hoping Caleb and Hyatt (with a better performance this time) can absorb a chunk of his minutes.

This isn’t a great match up for Cliff so I also hope we don’t just try to force the ball in to him because he’s not going to be able to convert over Dickerson.
