I don’t know if this should be stickies or just bumped after a bad loss but I’d like to waste a few minutes before what will undoubtedly be an equally or more disappointing basketball game.

Yeah it’s not great, but it’s one game but it’s baseball and this stuff happens. It doesn’t prove that we’re doomed because Ginn is hurt and it doesn’t prove that Lemonis is a crappy coach without Mangum on the team. It proves that we played (and have been) like ****. The offense will get it going and midweek games are where you test your new guys on the mound. Unfortunately a true freshman from New Jersey and a grad transfer from Fordham **** the bed and gave up seven runs before the end of the afternoon commute. **** in 2017 almost three years ago to the day we gave up 10 runs in the bottom of the ninth to lose 13-8 vs. Morehead State. February is about seeing who’s got it and who doesn’t. Sometimes you can out talent a team in the process (Feb 19th 2017 vs. 269th RPI western Illinois, back to back 4-2 wins vs 221st RPI UMass Lowell in 16 or our two wins to take the series vs 245th RPI Utah State in 2018, both won by two runs). In the now immortalized 2013 season we had three one run wins vs teams outside of the top 200.

I’m but sure if it’s coincidence or not but like clockwork, every other year, sees us drop a load in our pants vs a way inferior opponent. In 2014 we lost both halves of a twin billing to 221st RPI Hofstra. In 2016 we gave lost a game where if you looked at the box score you’d think Eastern Kentucky was aggressive early and scored two TDs and then converted the Both 2 point tries after then state rallied but couldn’t make up on the conversions, final 16-12. In 2018 we lost to the previously mentioned 245th RPI Utah State team and mustered 1 run in 11 innings.

So now that I’ve successfully wasted enough time and I’m going to cut this here. Bad loss, LSU has a loss to the team ranked below Texas Southern in the RPI.

If this game haunts us in May then way more went wrong than just this one game. This season will be just like every other season, we win 18+ SEC games and we will be in discussion for host and possible national seed. This game sucks but don’t make it out to be more than it is.

We just shouldn't be playing games like this at all. They hurt your RPI even if you win, and hurt it even more when you lose.

There's never any guarantees, but we shouldn't play any non-conference games against teams we can't reasonably expect to end up in the top 150 or so in RPI.

It should not considering the upcoming SEC slate. I seriously doubt TSU will be at the bottom of the SWAC.

We had one of those Ron Polk "That's Baseball" days.

You can't win or lose any titles in February.

Good write up. There were several posts in the Ginn thread that were brushing this loss off as well, and I’ve got no problem with that at all when we’re talking about the impact to the season as a whole. One L is not the end of the world

My general concern is the pitching rotation without Ginn. This team had very little proven depth even before Smith and Ginn went down, and now that we’ve seen a taste of what our Sunday pen and mid-week pitching looks like without them, all current indications are that we’ve got a problem. Our struggles at the plate continuing against a guy with a 12.15 ERA tonight certainly don’t help

It’s far from being time to flip out, but Lemonis has some things to figure out for sure

Does anyone know what happened to Eagan?

We actually gave up only four earned runs tonight. It wasnt great on the mound and Hunt is not gonna help us this year but im not down on the pitching like i am these at bats. But hunt should have been pulled far earlier.

I agree that it’s on Lemonis to figure it out. And a lot of it is gonna be up to the new guys. The new comers were a combined 1-20 with Kamren James getting the only hit for a player that wasn’t a full time guy last year. Figuring out the right chemistry will be important but that’s why Lemonis gets the big bucks.

As far as pitching goes we’re definitely talking about microscopic sample sizes but Dunlavey was great in three innings vs. Oregon State and Hunt was pitching his first live action of his college career. I’m going to throw their performances out. And if I can allow myself to play both sides of the coin, Sims had another outing and looks like he’s going to be great. Self and Price did what they were supposed to so not much to take away there. Sunday kind of felt like a stress test for Shemper. He feels like a one inning lefty as the season progresses.

Terrible loss

But if we do what we are supposed to do come league play, this upcoming weekend, and Ttech, then in shouldn't matter. Crap losses happen all the time on baseball. It almost happened when southern visited our regional a year ago.

We had guys looking to hit Harden like velocity 500 feet tonight. I know these guys can hit and we will score runs. I was hoping tonight would build confidence at the plate. Tomorrow is a new day.

Just saying that is not possible

It was T9, but yes it was a colossal cluster.

I’m ok with the pitching so far this season but our hitting has been VERY soft. Except for a small handful of innings we’ve looked bad at the plate.
Texas Southern’s team ERA entering the game was over 10.0 for goodness sakes.

I believe after tonight we only have ONE starter hitting over .300? Might actually be two, the updated stats aren’t out yet. Either way, considering our schedule so far that’s pretty bad.

We are going to have a LOT of 10+ strikeout games vs SEC Friday/Saturday pitching this year. Get ready.

Both Westburg and Foscue are hitting above .350. Everybody else is bad, Pimentel needs to sit, his bat is bad and his defense isn't great either

Not sure why anyone is blaming pitching. We can't hit.

Our pitching is exactly what we thought it would be, a work in progress, and it's actually ahead of schedule considering the injuries. The problem is we can't hit. And I certainly don't understand the Lemon's choices of who to play, and the lineups.

The only set starters should be Jordan, Allen, Westburg, Foscue and Hatcher. The rest can be rotated. And at this point Westburg and Foscue need to be either 2-3 or 3-4, but nonetheless they need to hit next to each other.

Hitting is the bigger problem right now. Last year we didn't pitch it well in a lot of midweek games either but we scored what was necessary to win. There were multiple midweek games last year that we started out down 5-0 or worse against some really subpar competition but came back to win.
