What other former bulldog basketball players deserve this honor? Let's say there is a five year grace period before they can have their jersey hung from the rafters.

I'll say Malone and Super D.

I thought this was discussed earlier...

But easily, it would be:

Jeff Malone, Erick Dampier, and Lawrence Roberts... others could be up for debate i guess

if you are retiring some, then, Malone, Wilson, Dampier. I am in favor of banners celebrating certain players. I wouldn't mind a banner with the names of the 1991 SEC champions (because they really brought us back out of the basketball wilderness) and the 1963 team (because of the significance of their season). Of course these unveilings would be done at games with national media attention.

That's the distinction between retiring a player's "jersey" and retiring a player's "number." I'm all for putting the jersey in the rafters but not making the number off-limits in the future. From the release it appears that we are only hanging a banner and not banning anyone from ever wearing the number 52 again.

I played for him. I loved him to death, but he wouldn't hesitate to let you know about his records. Adolph Rupp kept in touch with him for a while after his playing days.

That's what I got out of it as well. I agree that we should not prevent anyone from wearing a number but I do think we need to really begin this tradition of recognizing our greats by honoring them with banners.

I believe at one time we had ballplayers names on the outfield fence, but have we done what we have done with Bailey for any of those greats?

This was just a bump in the road for him. He never acted like he was glad to be here. He never promoted MSU in any way. Good player for MSU but not the athlete I think should have his jersey retired.

That guy's such a legend, from MSU, the Pistons and the Celts...
He should have a street named for him, or something.

I shared meals with him a couple of times about 45 years ago, when I was an undergrad.
Great guy, great Dawg.

had a snide comment about you in Porkchop's post on the subject. You going to Super Bulldog Weekend? Had thought about taking my boy down, visiting the outlaws & inlaws, & maybe doing a little turkey hunting. We should do lunch sometime (but they're working my arse off right now).

PM me your cell phone #, in case we both make it.

Work is indeed a beotch, that's my issue. I'm quite overdue for a lunch with the son of the guy who owns one of the Ole Miss boards; he works in Madison. Same work interference. But since U & I work nearby, perhaps a lunch at Bevill? Again, PM.

Our group will probably tailgate at the usual venue, just south of the Hump, for SBDW. Hope we can all make it. If so, join us. I go for mainly the baseball games, but this year, I'm wooly enough to want to see the football at 5 also.

I agree that Roberts shouldn't have his jersey retired, but to say he did nothing for MSU is ludicrous.

Jeff Malone

Erick Dampier

Marcus Campbell (sarcasm)

I want to say Timmy Bowers should have his number retired to, but I think I'm being biased because he was my favorite basketball player at MSU.

Never promoted MSU? Every time he got press, the MSU name rode along. And he only got good press.

What the F do you expect, should he stump for MSU in Presidential Primaries or something? Remember when he finished 3rd in the friggin country for POY honors???...That promoted MSU a ton.

I thought the question allowed an opinion. That's my F'ing opinion. Seems another believes his jersey should not be retired but it's his opinion Roberts did promote MSU, just as you thought so. What the F do you expect? Any player that we like and plays well, gets interviewed by WCBI deserves to have a jersey retired? You ever heard of Wiley Peck? Ricky Brown? I guess a popularity poll is the best way to retire jerseys. Branden Vincent gets my vote.

any such honor/recognition should be reserved for those that actually hold a degree from the university. not sure if the athletic hall of fame has this requirement or not but i assume they do.

obviously there could be exceptions, a la keifer. which i guess brings up another question: is there anything on campus (plaque, memorial, etc) for student athletes that passed while on campus?

I don't think there is anything specifically dedicated to student-athletes, but the school does plant a tree for each student/faculty member that passes while enrolled/teaching at State. They also place a plaque at the base of the tree with the person's name on it.

Bailey Howell is the only Bulldog in the Naismith Hall of Fame, and no other Bulldog basketball player's number should be retired until enshrinement.</p>

to me that's the neat part of retiring/recognizing (I really don't care what they call it) numbers. There are certain players that are a huge part of schools' traditions that may not be nationally known. Darryl Wilson is a prime example. The Unforgettables at KY that have their jersey retired.

I think its great to recognize your own tradition.

Here's where we differ. I don't mind recognizing players and their numbers-- having them as maybe a part of a Ring/Wall of Honor. To give an example, I've got Rodney Stowers' #97 sticker on a cowbell, and I think he and Keffer McGee would be good choices for a Football Wall of Honor.

When it comes to number retirement though, I believe the only numbers that should be retired are those numbers of elite players who've been enshrined in their respective halls of fame. The only exception being that of college baseball because of its recent establishment.

if the school doesn't want to technically "retire" the number then so be it. I don' t think people really care about the tradition of someone not wearing a number. I think most people just like the fact that we are singling out some of our greats.

...I just have a differing opinion about his time here at MSU. Great player hands down. No doubt about it. Where is he now? Just wondering.

One problem I have is most of these suggestions are modern day players. We had players back in the day that are deserving and are more 'Faces of MSU basketball" than Lawrence Roberts.

What about Cameron Burns. Greg Carter. AS stated above Wiley Peck and Rickey Brown are really as deserving as any.

I would like to see us establish a ring of honor of some kind. I would also like to see us retire some numbers. The thing is you need to decide on some very set rules as to who is in the ring, and who has a number retired. The requirements have to be very high because these are numbers that will be retired forever, and hopefully we have hundreds of years of college athletics left.

I could see admission to the ring of honor if you are an all-american. Retire a number if they win the Naismith Award or a Heisman. I would also consider admission to the ring of honor that you received your degree from Miss. State, and attended here at least 2 years.
