Bama/MSU 1981 had forgotten how close this game was. Please note the 2:50

But my memory isn't perfect, because I thought Castille made the game ending interception, not Wilcox. That was a brutal game, though. That highlight shows a play where Bama was stopped and had to kick the FG to go up 13-10. On that play, the QB is tackled for a 2 yard loss, and his pitch man is getting crushed at the same time. That's what just about every play was like.

Legion Field? There was some really hard looking artificial turn there ... pretty much like playing on your living room floor.

All artificial turf used to be like that.

memory serves me correctly, we had a touchdown called back on a phantom holding call.

It was the day my hatred for Bama went to and through the roof.

But watching Bear walk out and lean on the goalpost and the bama fans stand up like they were seeing Jesus was something to behold.

were on TV each week.

Grave is correct, we had them beat, as we had 1st and goal with less than a minute left and they intercepted a tipped pass. Bellard's team was never the same after this game, as we lost to USM 7-6 the next week. As per usual, we would play them after a tough SEC game and would show up flat.

Flag didn't come out until receiver broke a tackle in flat and turned short pass into TD. Was a great road trip up until that point.

I agree with the above poster, that was one of the most brutal games I have ever seen. That is one of the few college games I have ever been to where you could clearly hear the pads popping in the stands. It was LOUD in there too, but you could easily hear the popping over the crowd noise. It was actually a very good game, it would have been a legendary one if we had scored when were inside the Bama 10 in that last minute. </p>

and we had a chance at the end of the game. I remember after watching the video clip of how we should have won that game. This wasa really great team.

Just a brutal game. I don't ever remember seeing so many players helped off the field on both sides.

Wasn't this the game where we got down to the 1 or 2 yard line there at the end and had a false start penalty (which led to the need to pass which led to the interception)? I remember our linemen were complaining the Alabama defensive players were simulating the snap count but that arguement didn't get far.

yelling out our snap count and getting away with it. We were 1st and goal at the one on that last possession and were penalized back to the 6 yd line on the 1st down play.( because our line jumped on the snap count yelled out by bama linebacker.) On the 3rd down slant pattern to an open Danny Knight, Jim Bob what's-his-name for Bama was all over Knight's back way before the ball arrived.

Bruce Arians after our spring practices had concluded in the late spring of 1981. That hire by Bryant caused MSU to change alot of signal calling for that game. ADVANTAGE = Bryant

I can count at least 4, Kent Hull, Tyrone Keys, Johnnie Cooks, Wayne Harris. Maybe Danny Knight as well??

Here are things I remember about that day.

1. I sat so low it was difficult to see over the crown of the field. No jumbotrons in that day so it was difficult to see the other side of the field. I thought Haddix might score on the short pass near the end of the game.

2. 2 very physical defenses. We had studs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. I didn't say a word to my roommate the whole way back to Starkville. Devastating loss. This was a revenge game for Bama and we came so close to beating them 2 years in a row.

4. We got a break on a missed Bama FG by hitting their kicker (nothing was called). I think he was injured.

5. I think it was the 2nd qtr that Bama got their wishbone going well. We had a hard time stopping it.

6. We did not do a darn thing offensively in the second half before the last drive. Lots of fumbles.

7. We caught fire on the final drive. I really really believed we were going to score.

8. We were preseason #4 (AP).
