A poster asked him to Barton Simmonrs, one of the national 24/7 guys, to comment on his thoughts of Big Dawg Camp, this is what he said:

This was one of my favorite school camps that I attended this offseason. One thing that really distinguished the BDC was that there were no scrubs. Granted the QB position was not good and the 1on1s suffered because of it, but other than that there were very few players there that were not at least D1 prospects, even if they weren't SEC prospects. The small numbers allows for great evaluation opportunities and lots more 1on1 time with the top-end guys.

I also was really impressed with the coaching staff. Each of the coaches have their own styles but the guy that I really enjoyed watching work was DL coach Chris Wilson. High energy guy that is a teacher and a motivator. Not just one or the other.

All the way around though, I thought this was one of the more enthusiastic, energetic staffs. Collectively they seemed to be good teachers/communicators and also personable and likeable.

I've been to several camps that just don't have a high-intensity vibe. That wasn't the case at BDC at all.

Also, Fred Smoot is not a coach but he could be and should be. He was having a blast out there and he was both hilarious and really good. If he wants to go that route, he's definitely got a future in coaching if only because he's not one of these guys that is just going through the motions. He seems to love being out there and working. Would be a great recruiter too.

thanks for posting. Smoot has a level of passion that few people enjoy and realizes that football is soo much more to most of these kids than just a sport.

Technically, couldn't he be a graduate assistant? The mandrives a Rolls Royce, he obviously doesn't need a salary.

Edited to add:HavingSmootfull-time in Starkvegas would be SWEET.He'd bringattention to our program, he'd get us recruits, he'dcontinueour success ofcoaching up and putting star DB's on the field, and he's an entrepenuer.I think at one point hehad stuff in place to have a line ofenergy bars or something andI believe he owns a couple WH's in DC. He has the ability to make thingsin Starkville happen, and being a full-time resident would get that ball rolling.

It seems like Smoot, Porkchop, Moulds, Madkin, and Lee just showed up out of nowhere one day after years and year of not hearing a single thing about them. Did Croom really do that much to seperate them and the school or has Dan done that much to reach out to them? These are all relative nobodies who came to MSU and did very well, Madkin being the only one not having an NFL career, but these are all former players young enough that kids we're currently recruiting remember watching play on sundays.

GET THEM INVOLVED EVEN MORE! Props to the staff for getting them to BDC.

have people like that around your program. I want him coaching. How could you not get excited about playing football and learningfrom that guy. He's a great leader for our university. Obviously he doesn't have to be out there, he wants to.

Edited to add: send that guy to see Antonio Conner soon.

there.

Didn't give any reasons other than saying Crooms was disrespectful to the Kang and didn't make the ex-players feel welcome. This was not a big time player and Crooms probably didn't even know who he was, so I'm not exactly sure what happened. He pretty much has no tie to state now, which is unfortunate b/c while he wasn't a big time player, he is well off enough to make significant donations.

I always liked the guy. Seemed like someone you'd like to have as a good buddy. He was not only funny, but a great player too. I'd like to see him back at MSU.
