It appears that the morning kickoff was dictated by CBS' decision to air a national double header this weekend. From the latest Wednesday Update:

SEC ANNOUNCES MSU-ALCORN STATE GAME TIME
We
will play our first football day game of the year a week from Saturday
(Oct. 2) when the Bulldogs play host to Alcorn State at Davis Wade
Stadium. CBS will have a national doubleheader that day, and since both
game windows are protected for the national network by the SEC –
assuring that no conference game will be played against those network
games – all conference contests that day will be in the morning.
Was scraping the game all together really the best way to go? Why not just have a big Baseball Alumni Tailgate on Saturday before and after the game, hang out in Starkville that night and then have the game on Sunday morning? I realize that guys will need to travel on Sunday, but surely this is better than canceling.
With that said, it's unfortunate it didn't work out. I'm sure it would have been a cool weekend for you guys.
