Baseball Grad Transfer

RJ Yeager from Mercer is transferring in from Mercer. He entered the portal after July 1st, but he is a grad transfer so I assume he is eligible next year.

Played SS and hit .308 with 13 HRs last year. 32 total XBHs in 57 games. Has basically been Mercer’s starting SS and middle of the order hitter since showing up in 2018. And impressively only had 7 errors all year.

Spots are going to be competitive next year, and it’s great to add another older guy to the mix in the MIF. Between him, Forsythe, Meche, and any incoming freshmen, the best two will play.

My guess is they try to turn this guy into a second baseman and keep Forsythe at short.

Probably the most likely outcome. That would be the ideal result if Forsythe’s bat can come around and be at least serviceable.

Where this is really great for us is defensively. A middle of the field with Forsythe, Yeager, Logan Tanner, and possibly Jess Davis would probably be the best collective defensive group we have had in recent memory. Maybe ever.

Pretty much. And the outfield is going to be Brad Cumbest in either LF or RF and either Jess Davis or Braylon Skinner will likely be the CF. Question is can Kellum Clark play OF or is he still a DH? The other corner OF spot is going to have to hit so while defensively it would be good to play either of Davis or Skinner there, I don't know that either of them will hit well enough to get that spot if they don't win the CF job. Not sure who our other OF candidates are going to be?

My hope is that Forsythe 9who did a great job in the WS, has a lot of batting practice during the off season and comes back strong. For a freshman, he did pretty good this year, I hope he does even better next year. Probably the only improvement he absolutely needs to make is with his bat. Any defense capability improvements he makes are just icing on the cake. I sure would like to see him at SS again next year. Having him there with a 325 batting average is what I wish for when I rub the lamp, and look for the genie of baseball wishes to pop up.

Keep an eye on Matt Corder from Germantown MS

And Hinds CC. He is a very good hitter with power that can play outfield or infield. It’s going to be some battle next spring.

I just don’t see Skinner as an everyday SEC starter. He’s been around a long time, and he hit .205. I like him on the team as a role player, but I don’t see room for a .100 point improvement. That’s what we have to have from a CF spot.

Just a 60 point jump and he would be good with the defense he plays and the speed on the bases he provides. Only everyday players that batted over .300 this season were Tanner and Rowdey. Our team batting average was only .278. He would do fine if he could hit in the .260-.270 range. But it will likely be an either or starting in CF between he and Jess Davis and Davis doesn't come in with stellar offensive numbers either.

I'm late to the party on this news, but I'm excited as hell about this dude. He's gonna come in with a serious chip. I hope he makes every MLB scout on the planet have to answer for not encouraging their bosses to draft him...
