Baseball question for those with more baseball knowledge...

Why would you have a leadoff hitter that can't hit? It seems to me that you would better serve yourself getting the leadoff man on base and because statistically he will get more chances at the plate... and if he can't hit, it's likely he won't see many balls in order to walk either...soooooooooooo you would think you'd want a decent hitter in the leadoff spot. i'm just saying...

You want a lead-off hitter that can get on base...hit, bunt, walk. Doesn't matter as long as he's on base. I think the important thing is the lead off hitter is going to get the most at bats...however he's only guaranteed he will be the lead off hitter once per game. You gotta have a guy who knows how to get on base...usually a line drive hitter, but not always.
