1 thing Cohen seems to like is to steal 3rd with 2 outs. My question is: why would you ever do that? I have thought about this for a while and I really can't see the reasoning.

What are the odds that you will steal 3rd successfully and then get a passed ball/wild pitch, balk or infield hit? If its less than 20%, which I would think it is---then you've got a much better shot of getting a base hit which would score anyone from second that you are willing to try to steal 3rd with.

Anybody got any thoughts on this?

The only way you should ever steal 3rd with 2 outs is if you know it's a sure thing for you to make it.

like don't piss in the wind and don't bang your best friend's sister. It's troubled me that we have made several 3rd outs at third so far.

but, having a man on third puts a lot more pressure on the pitcher and catcher (to avoid wild pitches and pass balls). maybe he likes the added pressure on the battery. you can get a bigger lead from second than you usually can from first, so maybe if you can get that extra step (no matter whether there are 0 outs or 2), then you should attack and try to steal.

i don't necessarily agree with it - i'm just trying to throw out any reason i can think of to steal 3rd with 2 outs. i see that you mentioned the wild pitch/pass ball situation, and you're definitely right - you surely have a better chance of getting a hit than any of those things happening. perhaps it is more his "attack" style. if you can get a lead, you should always try to take the next base.

the odds of getting that base hit are fairly close to 20%? Now, I havent listened to more than 15 minutes of a single game this year, so I have no idea when/where/who. How many times have we tried it so far? What is the success rate? How many times have when been in the same situation and, instead of stealing, had the 3rd our come from the plate?

I guess it all depends on playing the odds and what the score is when he tries it. I could easily see the odds of either situation panning out being fairly close.

never 3rd out on 3rd. And the only sure bet for stealing three with two outs would be if the opposing team can't find the baseball (under the fence, in the dugout, whatever...). Otherwise, I think we should rely on base hits, unless U. Bolt is sitting on second.

of successfully stealing 3rd and then getting a balk, WP/PB, or infield hit are, but if they are less than 20% (which I imagine they are by a lot), it makes no sense seeing as how all of our regulars except Collins bats at least .250 and even collins bats .221.
