What is our rotation going to look like next year when we lose Stratton, Reed, Routt, and who knows when Bracewell will be back to full strength. Looks like we will be back to square one if you ask me. We need to start developing more depth immediately. Mitchell needs to start showing some improvement and these freshman need to start showing some promise. Holder is the only one who has impressed me any. Maybe Will Cox. We better have some good hitting next year or we are going to be in some trouble.

Now, whether Stratton goes as a jr in the draft, and whether or not Routt wants to apply for a medical redshirt for his Soph season, is yet to be seen...

But it is overly pessimistic to assume we lose all 4 of those guys...even 3 of the 4.

Graveman will return next year- so we will have 2 pitchers returning with SEC starts under their belt. We seem to be bringing our Freshmen along slow- which is a good thing

Almost all of our position players will be returning- which should make us better offensively and defensively next season- that will also help the pitching staff. We'll be fine next year- we just have to grow up this year.

We are young this season- next season? No

Im not sure what round is he projected, but I would guess top 10 rounds based on performance. For a college junior, especially with the new draft rules, he will either take the new slot number, or he can sign after his senior year for 10K.

Are there any other players that are draft eligible that MSU is at risk losing?

He will be a top 5 round pick easy. He has always had great stuff, but he has put it all together this year. <div id="myEventWatcherDiv" style="display:none;"></div><div>
</div><div>Next year will be an uphill battle pitching wise losing out unquestioned top 2 guys in Stratton and Reed, we will need Mitchell to take the same leap that Stratton has made this year. </div>

the next year, you bring the fences in about 25 feet so that power guys like Hunter Renfroe feel like they are playing on the old Copiah Academy Diamond.**

And have much better pitching this year. Everyone saw Wahl coming, but Hively and Meyers have really come out of no where. Wait and see how they do in the fall before giving up hope.

I'm going to assume that Stratton is gone and for this to be a "worst case scenario" I'm going to assume Routt is gone. (Hold your comments on Routt- I know)

Anyway:

I think Evan Mitchell will get a spot- he will be a junior, and there is a good chance he will be in our rotation very soon- as in possibly this week. He has started against SEC teams before, and has already started some big game and will be going to the Cape Cod League this summer.

Kendall Graveman- he will be a senior. Has plenty of experience. I look for him to be a leader of the pitching staff.

The Sunday spot is up for grabs- I would say Fitts, Lindgren, Woodruff, and Cox will all be competing for that spot. And I don't think you can rule out Ben Bracewell and Ross Mitchell- although I think both are unlikely.

Those first four guys are going to go play summer ball and are getting their feet wet in the SEC. I think they will take a big step forward next year. It wouldn't shock me at all if our rotation next year ends up being Fitts, Lindgren, and Woodruff to be honest- but I think it's somewhat unlikely. Way too soon to know.

As far as replacing Reed- I think it will be tough because he is so good, but I think Ben Bracewell and Taylor Stark could handle it. I think you may even see Holder take the job, but I think he is more of a set-up guy, and I really like John Marc Shelly one of our recruits out of Memphis. He tops out at 95, and I think he is our closer of the future.

To me, if Stratton comes back, that would be awesome. I'm not holding my breath on that right now- it all depends on where he is drafted, and that's something that no one knows right now. I agree with the posters saying that he is in the 5-10 range type of pick right now. If he continues to do well, he could go even higher. Now, if June rolls around and he slips through and goes in the 20th round- well, then I may feel a little bit better.

Routt- I think he is a mid-20's round guy at best, and certainly may not be drafted. Someone may take a flyer on him because he is left handed, but he has had injury issues, and he had an arguement with Cohen in the dugout during a game over being taken out and he has struggled. I think he will probably be back, but it's going to come down to whether he wants to keep playing or not and I think if he gets drafted, odds are he will go ahead and go.

you don't have the luxury of recruiting players that are going to take a year or two to be productive in the SEC and nationally. You've got to recruit guys who can be productive almost immediately and be good solid vererans by their 2nd year. I keep hearing how young we are. Guess what, everybody's young.

That is where the problem lies. Freshmen have to be able to step in at this game. Unfortunately, in SEC baseball recruiting, like football, just being in the top 25 or so puts you in the bottom third of the conference. This makes it extremely difficult to compete on a consistent basis. Then, you also have USM to contend with, so we end up getting our *** kicked. Unless Cohen can get a handle on the recruiting situation with UM and USM hounding his *** constantly, it is going to be a persistent uphill battle. I'm not confident he will be able to do this now that the situation has gotten out of hand.

And we can thankLarry Templeton's decision to rehire Ron Polk for letting the situation get out of hand. McMahon had rebuilt the program back to where it was in the 80s and then we pissed it away by rehiring an old coach who was playing out the string and cared more about fighting the NCAAthan he did about the MSU baseball program.

He has looked good on the mound, except against Kentucky, when Cohen put him in a pretty ****** spot<div id="myEventWatcherDiv" style="display:none;"></div>

Just because someone gets drafted high out of high school doesn't mean they are able to contribute to a SEC team.

Golson and Jake Overbey were the two highest draft picks that made it to campus and neither have really contributed. Same goes for MSU and Woodruff and Lindgren. Golson and Woodruff are tool guys and both may not contribute as much as each school expects.

that there are three basic types of players.

1. Draftable talent type guys- you need them obviously, but a lot of times they are guys like Hunter Renfroe and Brandon Woodruff. Guys that may take a year or two to be ready, but you need them because talent wins. In a perfect world, you get a guy like a Paul Maholm that can come in and contribute right away, but that's rare. These are your three year guys more often than not.

2. Solid college players- You need them because like Pat says- you need guys that can come in and be solid players. There is sort of a fallacy that if you have seniors, it's because they are not good players. That's not the case- where would we be without Caleb Reed? And in the past Jon Harden, Jeffrey Rea, etc. Now, I'm not saying that we need everyone to be a solid player- see above about talent- but I do believe you need a good mix of both. The fact of the matter is, your seniors on a college team are your leaders a lot of times, and a lot of times, they force some of the more talented guys to step it up. I'd say Adam Frazier is in this category.

3. Walk-on types. Evil necessity I guess- but I don't know that they have a lot of value as far as winning. Usually they fill roles and that sort of thing. Too many of these, and you will not win.

Experience is a huge issue for us with these injuries because it forces us to play freshmen such as Fullerton, Britton, Casey, Brayden Jones, and then we have Wes Rea and Demarcus Henderson who are RS freshmen. Now that we are finally getting healthy- and as long as nothing else happens the next couple of weeks, we should be back a full strength. Norris was our leading hitter, and CT brings a lot to the table, Brent Brownlee is a fifth year senior, Taylor Stark is one our best relief pitchers, and Ben Bracewell is one of our better pitchers. Adding them back will give us a lot more experience and guys that can play and help us out now.
