"McNickle says sorry..gotta be honest..we havent even ever watched you pitch ever."
about why our baseball program is down. Think we could have used Louis Coleman this year? Actually, Coleman probably caught a break because McNickle would have royally <17> him up. Now he will have a chance to go pro.
But back to the recuiting thing- "never even ever watched you pitch". If Coleman was from Alaska, I could maybe give them a break. But geez, how far is freaking Greenwood from Starkville? Two hours? Even worse I think they're in the same division as Starkville Academy.
What kind of a team would MSU have had this year if they had Coleman, Logan Power, Jake Morgan, Brian Dozier, and Bo Davis instead of guys like Jet Butler, Ryan Powers, and the assorted scrapheap that MSU called a bullpen? All of those players had ties to MSU or are guys that I know for a fact would have come to MSU if Polk, Raffo, and McNickle had even half of a clue. Probably for less than what they were offered from LSU, UM, and USM.
I'll say one thing- if we had those guys, my happy *** is in Starkville right now. And it's not because of the Lyceum Series either.
I saw a stat the other day. Mississippi per capita is 19th in the country as a state as far as baseball players drafted. For the McClure's that's top half of the country. We were ahead of some states that our competitors are in- Arkansas, Kentucky, South Carolina. Alabama was ahead of us at 16th. Here's my point- there is some talent in Mississippi. If you clean out the state, you can put together a VERY good team. Heck-look at the SR's this year. We have two teams in the thing. I think only Texas has more. We have as many teams as Florida and more than California. While places like Florida have a lot of talent, we're still going to get C-list talent most of the time (see Jet Butler) because those players are going to want to go to FSU, UF, Miami, or one of the plethora of other good baseball programs. That's just the truth. Plus, most kids that MSU gets are kids that WANT to play for MSU and they're going to go all out for MSU. It's stupid to just shun Mississippi players the way that were doing and make them jump through hoops like we were. And that's why I think it's very important to recruit Mississippi hard.
