Can someone please put together a list of our baseball signees with some background/position/height weight/schools offered etc... I think AzzuriDawg does a nice one for football and dawgsbite has a list of football and basketball ones but I can't find anywhere that has our baseball signees listed. I can't be the only one interested in this. Thanks in advance. I know it's a tall task.

We are going to cut a ton of people after the season, because we aren't losing hardly anybody from our team and are bringing in 11 guys.<div id="myEventWatcherDiv" style="display:none;"></div><div>

...just because a kid plays catcher in HS/JUCO doesnt mean that is where he will play at MSU. Hell, even pitchers have played other positions

We "signed" one true catcher, Daniel Garner, who Perfect Game calls a 9.5 on a 10 scale, meaning he's a likely top 5 round draft pick.

The other signee, Shempert, is a dual position guy.

We have 7 signees, so the vast majority of that list are walk-ons.

I think the baseball people on the board can confirm that. Things may have changed, but he doesn't seem like a Cohen player.

From everything I've read you have two real draft risks in Garner and Shelly. I know Garner is seriously considering going pro, but the new draft rules and pool money will really force more kids to go to school because they won't realize that they will have more leverage leaving high school then they will leaving college.

but a catcher in theory should only also be able to play 1B/3B if he is to be moved around. I'd rather fill up the roster with SS/CF/P/3B. Typically the athletes playing these positions are better suited at moving to multiple positions than a catcher would be. List the player as the position he will play in college. If he is C/1B/3B then list him as such. Don't just put C and call it a day if he's not gonna play that position primarily at MSU.

you dumbass.

most hs teams put there best guy at p or c because of arm strength. bryce harper played c in hs and juco, yet he is an of, i bet he could manage at ss/cf/p/3b or any position on this years MSU team.

NONE of those guys have yet made our roster or even made it to campus. Just because they walk on doesn't guarantee them a spot. Those that are good enough will, those that aren't won't.

Your thoughts on a catcher is an old school junior high mentality that is no longer employed much in high levels of baseball. LOTS of highschool programs put their best athletes behind the plate. Reason? A catcher has a far, FAR bigger impact on a game than any other position player outside of pitcher. You have GOT to shut down the run game, be able to block balls in the dirt, etc. It's no different than recruiting a HS qb to come in and be a cornerback.

Now, when you talk about pro's, alot of guys that come out as catchers end up as outfielders or as a dh if they are studs, because the overall wear and tear is so much less, and you can get the longevity out of them elsewhere. It's the age-old Buster Posey/Joe Mauer discussion...

He hasn't progressed the way most had predicted he would.

As for Shumpert, all I know is that I was told the kid would be in junior college next year. This isn't a grades thing from what I understand. Like I said, I think some of the baseball people may know more on this.

on the word athlete with you. I agree catcher is a very pivotal position but I would be more inclined to put my best athlete at P/SS/CF. I see that you updated their positions with C/INF/OF and this was all I was asking for. Thanks.

I'd much rather have too many players as opposed to be short a spot because someone left unexpectedly.

And there is a difference between being on the team and being on the roster. 35 players are on the roster per NCAA rules. Other players that don't make the roster can still be on the team- but they have to sit out the year and they can't practice with the team for that year.

Obviously, those players are usually the ones that leave- but some do choose to stay, and we've had that happen before in past seasons.

And those players that aren't on the roster can come back and try again the next year if they so choose. Tanner Gaines is a good example of that- he wasn't on the roster last year, but was on the team, and then he came out again this year and made the roster.

We're definitely losing three guys- Reed, Stratton, and Brownlee. If I had to guess, we will probably lose somewhere between 3-5 more players that are currently on the team for whatever reason. And we probably won't get 1-2 signees. More than likely one. Losing three would be the absolute worst case scenario.

It is grades. Yes, Shempert did have an incident earlier this year, but if he doesn't make it to MSU, that won't be why he is not here.

I'm not counting on him- I think he ends up in Meridian or if someone takes a flier on him in the MLB draft, he will sign.

Teams bring in a lot of walk-ons for the fall so they have enough to scrimage. Then they cut most of them after the fall semester.
