Based on a recent thread here, just got Directv and it's awesome.

The only flaw I've found is that if you're in the metro Jackson area, you can't get the local channels in HD (only 12% of Directv customers have this problem). I had to ask (through Directv) the local channels if they would allow me to get NY local channels on HD, but Jackson's ABC and CBD said "NO!" Still waiting on a response from NBC and FOX. Also, the DVR is so much better than the Comcast crap. Still not sure why they made the hideous, purple format change a few months back.

as lazy as I am, and as much as I flip channels, if it's harder than pushing one button to change the channel, that's a deal breaker. Also, does your direct tv box then have the ability to record those channels? If the dvr won't catch them, that's another dealbreaker.

and tell them that your address for service is changing to the Memphis area but you would like to keep your billing address the same. That way they will think the service is in Memphis and you can get the local channels for the Memphis area. That will give you HD abc, nbc, cbs, and fox. You will not get the local news in HD but to my knowledge only Fox is doing local news in HD in the jackson market. I am still with Comcast until the local channels are in HD but a couple of my buddies have called and changed their service address to the Memphis area and told direct tv it was their hunting camp but to send the bill to their home address. They are thrilled with the service.

I will be making the change when I buy a house in about 4 or 5 months. Currently I can't do it because it's not my property I live in... But I'm fed up with comcast. Like everyone has said, the only downfall is the local channel problem, but if it's not solved by then, I may buy an antenna like another person suggested

for dropping the cable line for the antenna. My TV is right beside the gas fireplace, so from up in the attic, I could look straight down behind the wall that I had to drill. I hung the antenna on a rafter in the attic and faced it south to pick up the locals that boradcast from Houston, West Point and Columbus. Ran the cable from the antenna into the "ANT" input on the back of the TV, then ran auto-program.

The antenna was 49.99 at Best Buy. RCA flat amplified indoor antenna.

changing inputs on your TV.. say from HDMI to Antenna.. should be one button. I'm pretty sure your satellite box won't be able to record from your antenna.

There is a delay switching from the "TV" to "HDMI 1". The DVR thing, I've got to check into, but I can DVR "The Office" in lo-def, if necessary. That's about all I watch on locals.

Edit to add: According to the DirecTV web site, the antenna will hook up to the DirecTV receiver and will be able to use DVR. Link

Your receiver will treat the off-air local channels exactly as it treats channels you get through the DIRECTV satellite. This means your local channels will be integrated into your program guide and you'll be able to search for your favorite shows, view program descriptions, set parental controls and record shows to your DVR (if the receiver has a Digital Video Recorder).

for 3 of the big 4 (excluding NBC)... other than Sunday night football and maybe golf, you won't miss anything. The Super Bowl won't be on NBC for another 3 years so maybe they'll have it by then.

so I'd actually have to get up and walk up to the tv. Too much effort. Though it would be a good excuse to get a new tv.

luckily, you don't switch back and forth between BluRay and TV like I do flipping between channels. But yes, it's a pain in the ***. I need a new one, as this one only has one HDMI input too. Technology sure changes fast.

you can hook your antenna into your DirecTV box (if it's a newer model) and the local digital channels will come in complete with the program guides and everything in their normal channel spots. Again, I could be way off here.

I still think new and bigger tv is a better option.

I had Dish Network for about 3 months until Time Warner was available in my area. Out of the 3 months, I had 4 days that I did not have to reset receivers or contact customer service. They sent 4 installers and then the regional trouble shooter to my house trying to get it to work. Went through 6 different boxes and the damn things just didn't work. No trees in the way, no bad weather, it was just a crappy product.

I finally had had it with them and told them to come pickup their ****. They left holes in my walls and exterior of my house and then left me a bill for $500. After numerous calls to their customer service department and finally a letter form an attorney they were willing to drop the $500 they said I owed them. We just watched tv from rabbit ears until Time Warner, now Comcast, got service in my area.

I will go to watching TV on my computer before I give a dime to Dish Network. I am not saying that Comcast is fantastic, but when I turn on the TV it works. Did I have trouble with my HD being laggy at first, yes, but they came out, installed an amp, and it has been flawless since. Now the "upgrade" that left me with the cool Windows 95 DVR and Guide is a different story but it is still light years ahead of Dish Network.

...I did this for many years before Memphis got the locals in HD. You just get an antenna, hook it into the back of the receiver, and it works as if the channels are part of the DirecTV package. In fact, I didn't go to the locals in HD right away when they became available because it was tough to justify the additional cost when they were coming in over air for free. But, when we purchased additional HD TVs, the switch was in order.

Also, believe it or not, the HD picture quality, though great (and far superior to Comcast) over DirecTV is not nearly as good as the over air picture quality. The picture was amazing.

You need a HD DTV receiver. Call DTV and have them install the filter for local/ant. Mine works fine. I get local HD channels . The show up on the DTV guide as 11-1, 11-2 .ect. Its a incredible local channel picture on my 52 inch 1080p.

It took the guy a while to figure out where to put this new filter. It's black about 3 inches by 1 inch. It has something to do with HD over air ant.

but I guess anyone can have a bad experience with any carrier.

Personally, I love Dish Network. Been with them for, well, forever, can't even remember how long.

And I do get my locals in HD (including NBC) in the Jxn area.

I have had minor issues with Dish, but I have been a satisfied customer for about as long as they have been in business. I did have a lot of problems with the local channel issue when I lived in Mississippi. No problems here in Austin. I put in a HD antennae in my attic and ran it through the receiver and added those stations with no problem. I went ahead and added the local through DISH as well when they became available in HD. I kept the antennae for storms (hah) and for several channels local channels that aren't in the Dish Package, like a local weather/radar feed.

live in Tupelo. I tried telling DTV I was 'moving to my lakehome in Benton County' (Memphis market) and they said they'd have to dispatch a DTV Tech to verify I had the correct HD Dish, etc. Definitely sounded like they were going to verify that I had actually moved. Got cold feet. Would love to pull it off if you have other ideas.

I live in the metro Jackson, MS area. I looked at the next upgrade to the Local Channels in HD according to this:

OK Tatum, the response looks like some canned answer to make me upgrade. I take it the answer to the question is no, you can't give me a reason. How hard is it? Does every resident in Butte Montana subscribe to DirecTV with HD locals & our market in Jackson, MS, only has a thousand or so customers who wish for HD locals? There has to be some logic somewhere to explain this to the customer. Can't someone be a little more specific? The very 1st DirecTV system was sold in Jackson, MS, 15 years ago. That should help us get the service, right? If Jackson doesn't fit the formula to get on the list, just tell me. If it does, there has to be a schedule with Jackson listed somewhere or a formula to calculate who/when goes on the list. What's the procedure used to give you the last group including the markets of Dothan & Odessa. Do the right thing & explain this. If you can't, tell your boss you need the info. Thanks for the time Tatum.

Dear --------------,

Thank you for taking the time to write. I understand your concern in regards to receiving local channels in HD in the Jackson market. All of the markets you listed that will be receiving HD local channels are markets that we have recently began to carry the standard definition feed for and this feed is being broadcast as an MPEG-4 feed, which is the same way we deliver HD programming. Your standard definition local channels in Jackson are currently being broadcast as an MPEG-2 feed. This is not the deciding factor as to why these markets are scheduled to receive HD local programming as we can not provide any information as to how or why we provide different markets with HD locals before another. Unfortunately, we can not provide you any listing or schedule available that would provide a date as to when the Jackson market will have HD local programming.

Thanks again for writing and I thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

would you mind asking them if you can get a waiver to get a network national HD feed? If I could, I would switch.

Direct had a launch fail recently when the launch exploded and the satellite was destroyed.

As for the Waiver, It has to be granted by the local network affiliate. I guess you better call wapt etc. I don't know of anyone who has been granted one. Doesn't matter enough to me, I'm not changing from DirecTV.

Oh yeah, why the hell are you in here then bone daddy?

Now I am speaking from Dish Network standpoint, but maybe directtv has similar. I am also in memphis area. With the OTA antenna hooked into the dvr I can record up to 3 programs at the same time. You can record the 2 built in tuners and the 1 OTA channel. If you do not have the OTA you can only do 2 channels at the same time. Surprising how much I utilize this feature.
