I have to give the edge the Relf
w/TR running 2nd
and the mighty midget holding the chart

We needed one of the guys to either emerge or submerge, and it looks like we know who submerged. Relf is far from SEC quality, but his improvement seems to be happening faster.

I would start Tyson Lee. Chris Relf would be second and Tyler Russell third.

I don't think Tyler will be ready for the first game.

The only reason I wouldn't start Relf is because of accuracy. He threw about three balls that should have been intercepted. He also missed an open Delmon Robinson a couple of times by throwing passes in the dirt. With that said, he was still better than I expected and I would definitely give him the start if he were more accurate.

I would rather take my chances with the superior athlete. Bottom line, you can't teach Lee to become 6 foot 4, 230 pounds, you can't coach his arm to throw farther, you can't coach him to be faster. You can coach Relf to be a more accurate passer.

I think Lee will be the starter. I watched the spring game live and I re watched it on CSS and Lee just looked better. Lee does need to work on his long ball more though.

/Relf would have thrown 3 ints if we were playing any other SEC team yesterday.

Tyson Lee has the best track record, and he is smart, put up the best stats in the spring game. At the same time, he is small and is walk-on caliber.

Relf- Has improved the most, but to me is better served in a two QB system like UF with Leak and Tebow with Relf being the running QB.

Russell- Most gifted atheltically, also a true Fr. and needs to add muscle.

I can't really agrue with anyone else who says Lee or Relf, but to me, if we're going to burn Russell's RS anyway, why not go ahead and let him start against Jackson State and let him transition into the NCAA and SEC with the easiest opponent that we are going to face anyway. I'd much rather his first start be agianst Jackson State as opposed to LSU or someone like that. If he does well, we keep letting him play. If he struggles, we have Lee and Relf as back-ups. Plus, this is a new offense for everyone, including Lee and Relf. I don't know that they will be that much ahead of Russell.

This was the deciding factor for me- who gives us the best chance to win and go to a bowl now? To me, that's probably Russell. I'm just tired of us giving away seasons while we're trying to "build a program".

Now, that said, if Russell struggles in the fall camp, I would go with Lee.

I thought Robinson quit.

Because he simply isnt going to be ready after 3 weeks of practice.

Actually no. I guarantee you that today, Relf is a better college QB than Russell is. And he will be in August. And he will be on into September. Now, by the end of September and on into October, Russell may overtake him. But he is going to need some transition time.

If we could transplant Lee's tenacity and heart into Relf, I'd like our chances w/the 2nd tier SEC teams

It's just all going to depend on how Russell does in August, which at this point is an unknown. Normally, I would agree with you that we definately need to RS Russell if at all possible, but at this point I don't see it, and I don't think Mullen is interested in giving away seasons like Croom was. I do think that Russell will struggle some next year, but the question is will he struggle more than Lee or Relf? I also know that Russell is already doing everything he can as far as what the NCAA will allow, which is basically learning the playbook. From Mullen's comments about Lee "not throwing enough" vs Russell hanging out at practices, it does sound like Russell at the very least has more initiative than the guys we've got now.

All I know at this point, is that neither Lee nor Relf exactly looked like world beaters out there, and I have a feeling that if Russell comes in and can do better then Mullen is going to play him. And to be honest, I don't feel real comfortable with ANY of the QB's, and that includes Russell.

In the end, I'm for whoever gives us the best chance to win now. Even if that's Riley Saunders.

Playing a True Fr. is not exactly an unheard of thing in D-I, either.

about him RS'ing...there is basically no way we can do that...

My point is that you just cant throw him in for the Jackson State game because he has more potential. He has to go through the adjustment period before he is going to get the majority of snaps to lead this team. And most of your QB's that start now as true Freshman usually are going through Spring Practice with the team before their 1st season. Its actually very rare now for a QB to come in and earn the job in 3 weeks.

If he can then he should be able to learn the fundamentals of the offense and pick up the rest as he goes</p>

just to get his feet wet. If he does well, it might lead to more playing time. I don't think he will start but it wouldn't surprise me if he goes out there the 2nd series.

so that's a no go.

Can he and the receivers practice on their own. Is that illegal?

I think that most teams do that. I think most teams encourage that as well. Have a 7 on 7 pick up game on the Drill Field. No big deal.

but you can bet Relf will step on the field in the J-State game before Russell does. Not saying that will be the case every week thereafter, but Russell will be the 3rd QB to get snaps in that game
