he is a much better runner. Russell will probably be the better passer. It is a little unfair to compare them statistically because Russell doesn't have a receiver like Jordan Matthews.

I think Russell will be better this year than at least Rodgers, Mettenberger, and Shaw.

Dude will be a true Junior and has put up scary numbers so far. Plus, his offense isn't as QB-friendly as Wilson's. Other than that, I'm pretty much in agreement with yours. I'd also put Mizzou's returning QB ahead of Russell, strictly based on experience. The remaining 3 (TSUN, FL, aTm) don't have a named starter, so I notice they were left off your list.

6. Russell

8. Metzenberger
9. Wallace
10. Rogers

After the first 4, it's another down year in the SEC for QBs.

we will go8-4 or 9-3next year. He's legit, and no one really knows about him because all the talk was about Jefferson and Lee. He was probably overallthe most talented QB on their roster last year, and he has all of those offensive weapons coming back. LSU will be very good once again.

and probably Lee too. I'm sure he's talented, but damn, it shouldn't have been too tough to beat out those lollypops. But Les is one stupid mfer so who knows.

He may wind up being a good QB or he may wind up being just another overrated recruit, but he's going to have a learning curve this fall. If he was really the most talented QB on their roster, he would have seen some more playing time.

Is it just me, or does that look like a whole lot of average to anyone else?

Past the first two really, there is a pretty steep drop off. Maybe it's because some of them are unproven. The SEC has never been a QB driven league, but the list looks exceedingly average to me.

I agree - lots of average there. I'd put Bray above McCarron, who to be really isn't anything special - he's just surrounded by special players and basically is always looking at man coverage b/c of their running game.

And you can't deny the dropoff TN had after he went down last season. He's put up good numbers and makes pretty good decisions with the ball. I also really like Conner Shaw at SCar. Kid was a true freshman last year. He'll get better as he gets more reps and game experience. But they were still good after Lattimore went down, largely due to how Shaw played. It's not every day Spurrier starts a true freshman. As for McCarron, he looked really good in the BCSCG against LSU's D. He was the biggest difference between the 2 teams that night, imo. He actually looked like a QB you could tell "Go win the game" instead of "Don't lose the game." I think you'll see a big improvement from him in '12.

Good points. I'm sure Mizzou and A&M will help the SEC QB rep with their recruiting of Texas HS QBs that actually know how to throw a football a little bit before arriving to campus.

Defenses are just too tough. Outside of the prospect of a NC ring, why would a five-star QB go up against guys who'll be D-Linemen in the NFL in 2-3 years when they can be run out of bounds or hugged gently as they politely fall to the ground in the B12 or PAC12?<div>
</div><div>While I love the physicality of the SEC, believe it really is the last bastion of true hard-nosed football left, and hate the basketball score offensive lovefests that come out of Texas, Oklahoma, and the West Coast, more and more QB's know that the way to the draft and the record books is not through the south.</div><div>
</div><div>Running backs, select offensive linemen, and virtually all defensive positions can make a name for themselves here, but I think you're going to see A&M and Missouri's QB and Wide Receiver prospects dry up when kids start comparing the level of physicality and defensive play in the SEC vs the Big 12.</div>

Because if I'm a QB, and I play at a SEC school and do well against the top defenses in the country, I'm going to get drafted pretty high. Plus, several SEC schools run pro-style offenses like Bama, Tennessee, Florida I guess, Georgia, Arkansas, etc. And then you have some good QB coaches like Dan Mullen, Mark Richt, and Doug Nussmeir at Alabama.

Plus, while you will have to go up against SEC defenses, at least you will have a SEC o-line and SEC skill guys helping you out.

If I go to Washington State with Leach and light it up- I'm going to be labeled a system QB.

or if it's just that high schools in SEC country don't produce nearly as many college-ready QBs as states like California and Texas.

I'd be curious to see the break down on NFL QBs and where they came from, but I do know that a lot of the reason the Big 12 and Pac 12 are pass-happy leagues are because the high schools in the area produce players that are ready-made to run those systems.

It's not the lack of defensive talent in the area. It's the fact that they do have so many QBs with accurate arms that learned from a young age how to throw the football.

We just don't have nearly as much of that in the Southeast period. Many of the best SEC QBs over the years either came from a place like Texas (Stafford), or were athletes first (Newton/Tebow) that just happened to play QB.

I don't buy that good QBs avoid the SEC. I just think that there is a much better concentration of QBs that can throw in Big 12 and Pac 12 country.

With wins over Montana, Cincinnati and Buffalo. Whoop the 17ing doo. And when he came back, they beat Vandy in OT and lost to a Kentucky team that was playing a WR at QB. Just for fun, in SEC play last year he was:

75-151 for 943 yards with 6 TDs and 6 picks. Passer rating of 107.2. For a comparison, Chris Relf was 10th in the SEC in pass efficiency in SEC games with a rating of 110.9. Let that sink in. He's a pass-only QB and he didn't throw the ball as well as Chris Relf did. So tell me again what a great QB Tyler Bray is. Lot of hype. Very little production.

if more QB's in the NFL come from the SEC than any other conference.

Just recent random names:

Ole Miss- Eli Manning
Bama- John Parker Wilson, Brodie Croyle and I've got to think AJ McCarron in a couple of years.
Auburn- Cam Newton, Jason Campbell
Tennessee- Peyton Manning and Tyler Bray will get a shot.
Vanderbilt- Jay Cutler
Florida- Tim Tebow
Georgia- Matthew Stafford and Aaron Murray will get a shot.
LSU- Matt Flynn, JaMarcus Russell
Kentucky- Jared Lorenzen
Arkansas- Ryan Mallett and then Tyler Wilson will get a shot.

And that doesn't include guys like Randall Cobb, Matt Jones, and Micheal Spurlock.

Mettenberger is being overrated, at least for now. He was no more highly recruited out of high school than Russell and hasn't done anything on the D1 level.<div>
</div><div>Conversely, Russell is being shorted by many of our fans simply because he hasn't been a superstar yet. I think this year, with the offense built around him, an experienced WR group, and hopefully some emerging young weapons in Carr, Morrow, and Malcolm Johnson, we will see him start to live up to the hype.</div><div>
</div><div>Mettenberger may end up being better than Russell, but I don't think he will be, especially this year. I'm not sure how it's 'highly unlikely' for any reason other than no one's predicting it. I'll just say this....I hope Russell is at least as good because I have a feeling Mettenberger is going to disappoint.</div>
