Twitters report (Matt Stevens) Jalen Steele will not play his Sr. Season and will instead focus on graduating. Just Damn. Baseball season can't get here soon enough..

What did Rick Ray do to make the Dead Indians mad?

Seriously though, I hate it for Jalen. Very nice guy and a good player.

Nope, time to demand something other than mediocrity.

Seriously, I hate it for Steele.

With all the injuries he has had I can understand his perspective. Major props on focusing on graduating though

According to Jalen's twitter:

"Hilarious I'm not done playing just wanted to take a year off to get stronger and be strong for my senior year."

So, what do you believe? Clearly there is a misunderstanding of Jalen's status between he and the coaches or there was some poor reporting done. There is some type of miscommunication. Who has the inside scoop?

Edit: Jalen now says, "All I wanted was a redshirt and come back stronger next year but they got what they wanted...."

So, now it sounds like he was forced out.

If he "takes a year off", he'd lose his scholarship wouldn't he? And could he get it back his senior year? Not necessarily.

Has he gotten a medical redshirt yet with any of his previous injuries? Forgive me for not using the google machine to look that up. Local newspaper says he graduates this spring so he would have to enroll in grad school or secondary classes to play next year

He has 5 years to play 4. He has only played 3 years so this year can be considered a redshirt if I'm not mistaken.

But he if he graduates this spring that would mean he would have to go to grad school or a secondary major to be academically eligible

I hate saying it, but this is one reason why it is hard to blame a player for transferring when they see a reason to do so. There just isn't enough commitment from either side to warrant a player being loyal.

yea but that's not a big deal. sign up for a few classes in the fall to remain eligible. I think you can take 6 hours or something like that.

We are one hell of a long way from making the NCAA tourney again. Hope it's in my lifetime.

Sounds to me like Jalen wanted to take a redshirt year and Ray told him he needs to play this year.

Yea why would Ray agree to Steele taking up a scholi this year and next. He's not good enough for that. Finish off your last year and be gone. Guess it's just be gone now then. Oh well sucks for the bench depth this year but Steele's scholarship has already been dished out to a recruit. Ray's hands are tied here.

I thought you had to be at least a part time student which was 12 hours minimum when I was there

Well this is a situation where you can't blame Ray or Steele. For Jalen I certainly understand why he doesn't want to rush back and wants to wait a year and for Ray I can definately understand that while he's trying to build a team he doesn't want to burn a scholarship in 2014-15 on Steele.

Lewis? Maybe him & Steele came up with this plan to both take a year off and come back fully healthy in 2014/2015.

Rick Ray said screw that - you either play now or get to steppin.

Steele has his limitations, but I find it doubtful that we couldnt use a senior and very experienced guard who can shoot on next season's team.
Yes its great to have a spot open for a 4 year player that can impact the team moving forward, but unless all our guard recruits are 4* or better next year, it would be better to have Steele for his proven abilities and experience. You know what you will get with him, unlike an unproven mid level or lower 18yo recruit.
If we get some unranked 3* spring signee or a 2*, it would be better to have Steele. Spring 3* recruits and 2* recruits can be had at most any time, even by our middling program.

But would you be willing to make that call RIGHT NOW? If we show signs of life we may get somebody good interested late or maybe we get a transfer. There have also been rumors that Steele hasn't been the easiest person to deal with so if there is any truth to that, it may play a part. Don't get me wrong, i think he's a decent player and would be valuable as a guard off the bench but I can't fault Ray here

I would. We have approximately five players on the entire roster that I would consider to be SEC talent(assuming that Ready develops), we have three 3-star commits for 2014, and only one recruit ranked any higher that appears to be showing the slightest interest in us. I'm all for hoping that Ray recruits his butt off and ends up landing a stud, but until he proves that he can do that, I just don't see how you can tell a senior player like Steele to take a hike.

Here's hoping that Ray shows us all in the next few months why he chose to do that...

Well who knows how the conversation went down. Maybe Ray did say they'd wait and see and Steele wanted a commitment, maybe he told him to go pack his things. Who knows.

I just know that when you're building a program and when you're with Ray is you are taking some fliers on some kids you hope develop. Some will, some won't so quantity becomes important

Yeah, I would make that call right now. We are seriously lacking in overall talent and depth talent.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...ry-transfer-2013-offseason-college-basketball

With this many players transferring last season and the transfer trend projected to continue due to current NCAA rulings, we need anyone we can get who is a proven commodity.

Half of players in D1 are expected to transfer once. So half our roster leaving shouldnt be a surprise. Knowing that, yes I would make the call right now to keep Steele, even for 1 year.

With the number of players who dont qualify, dont enroll, , leave early or transfer over the last 6 years- I would 'oversign' by 1 without hesitation. Its almost a need at this point since as a coach its so tough to project who will be on the team next season.

Maybe Steele was too difficult to deal with. Who knows since we werent there.

One thing I do find odd is that both sides werent willing to redshirt him this season and make the decision in the spring if he would stay or not, depending on the situation.
Steele would get to sit out this season, just like he is doing now. Steele would still graduate, just like he is projected to do now. Steele would still be able to transfer and play immediately due to being a grad student, just like he is projected to do now.
They could look at the numbers in the spring and decide then if there would be a spot available.
There is just no downside for either Ray or Steele to wait until the spring. Whichever guy actually made the call on this- its an odd one.

Fair enough, and hey.. this is Ray's ship to steer now. I'm not going to fault him for making a call like this.

I just have a weird feeling about moves like this because it gives me the impression that Ray thinks he has a pretty long time to turn this thing around. Who knows what was promised, but I'm not seeing a whole lot of sense of urgency from him.

I think it's just the opposite. It sounds to me like Ray wanted Steele to play THIS year and Steele refused.
