But would you be willing to make that call RIGHT NOW? If we show signs of life we may get somebody good interested late or maybe we get a transfer. There have also been rumors that Steele hasn't been the easiest person to deal with so if there is any truth to that, it may play a part. Don't get me wrong, i think he's a decent player and would be valuable as a guard off the bench but I can't fault Ray here
Yeah, I would make that call right now. We are seriously lacking in overall talent and depth talent.

With this many players transferring last season and the transfer trend projected to continue due to current NCAA rulings, we need anyone we can get who is a proven commodity.
Half of players in D1 are expected to transfer once. So half our roster leaving shouldnt be a surprise. Knowing that, yes I would make the call right now to keep Steele, even for 1 year.
With the number of players who dont qualify, dont enroll, , leave early or transfer over the last 6 years- I would 'oversign' by 1 without hesitation. Its almost a need at this point since as a coach its so tough to project who will be on the team next season.
Maybe Steele was too difficult to deal with. Who knows since we werent there.
One thing I do find odd is that both sides werent willing to redshirt him this season and make the decision in the spring if he would stay or not, depending on the situation.
Steele would get to sit out this season, just like he is doing now. Steele would still graduate, just like he is projected to do now. Steele would still be able to transfer and play immediately due to being a grad student, just like he is projected to do now.
They could look at the numbers in the spring and decide then if there would be a spot available.
There is just no downside for either Ray or Steele to wait until the spring. Whichever guy actually made the call on this- its an odd one.
