9 transfers, 4 "graduated", and 1 turning pro.

And it's not like they were bad. Baylor has had the same coach since 2003, has a recent national championship, and regular NCAA tournament success including making it to the round of 32 last year via beating 8 seed Mississippi State. That coach/program can't even retain 1 player.

I wish someone could explain how current NIL/Transfer portal rules make sense to anyone long term.

And some people here think it’s strictly a Mississippi State problem. It’s happening everywhere.

It makes zero sense.

Because the way the system is now.... why not use the portal to leverage a new deal with current school?. Or go in the portal to get a new deal at another school?

The sad part is this won't even "raise an eyebrow" among NCAA basketball coaches, player or fans.

Baylor isn’t alone. Pretty sure there’s a Big 10 team in the same situation. Players not entering the portal are fast becoming the exception.

Not sure of who you are thinking of, but I think Iowa lost 10 this spring? One of em never even played- enrolled in the spring from Miami and transferred out.
Coaching change.
They have 6 transfers coming in, and I think 5 are from Drake(followed coach). Kinda funny- a bunch of players followed that coach to Drake from D2 NW MO State a year ago.

One of the problems is nobody knows the market. Since the numbers are secret everything is hearsay. I’m sure a lot of times teams are bidding against themselves.

Plus players have no idea if they are getting a “fair” deal from their current school so agents can always tempt them with the fact that there is “more” out there.

it would be fascinated to go back and interview kids 2 years later and see how many won vs lost money by entering

We know one that’s losing. Nico Imaleava going from $2.25M in a no income tax state to $1.75M in a 13.3% income tax state.

I totally believe that article and makes it impossible to blame coaches for anything these days.

Most are the mercy of their war chest. Can you imagine thinking you are overpaying at $500k to see another school offer $1.2M.

That guy tells his buddies who tell their buddies and suddenly everyone thinks they are worth $1M.

Try your luck at recruiting in that situation. We have to smart - let the spenders spend their money and evaluate well on the clearance isle

This is why evaluations may now be more important than coaching. If you drop 1.2M on a kid and he craps the bed, you're in trouble. It's like the Cleveland Browns paying Watson all that money. For schools like us, you put yourself behind the 8 ball with 1 or 2 bad evals. If your guys don't produce at their pay scale, you're screwed.

If this article is accurate, the market is crazier than you probably think:

It has to be a strange dynamic between a 3 star prospect from 10 years ago who came off the bench for 4 years at the same school, got into coaching, and is now making less than the 3 star incoming transfer he's coaching.

Hadnt really thought of it that way. But o think you’re absolutely right. Evaluating players is going to be critical.

There are so many very obvious reasons, this just being another one, to stop this insanity!
But whoever is in charge keeps allowing it to happen.
It’s stupid and I can’t believe anyone really likes what’s happening.
I’m not sure some players even like it.

There are some people in this world who can’t help themselves.

Thry wanted to open Pandora’s box. Well that SOB is wide open now!

I will say the NCAA deserves blame too, and they should have planned for the future better.

Pretty sure Maryland had a full turnover.

You make a good point. I bet the agent gets paid eAch time a kid transfers and a deal is signed. Agents probably drive this more than we realize.
