There are multiple open, and murmurs or more coming. Anyone want to play the guessing game with the coach carousel firing up? Idk how long someone like Izzo wants to keep doing it. I actually thought he’d be one of the first to call it a career when NIL took effect. Do they have a coach in waiting on that staff? Do any of these schools have coaches in waiting? Seems like most of the blue bloods will shoot for the moon due to the money they will be paying out.

Dusty may to unc is being talked about but in this day and age of NIL, NC might be like Bama. Not like it used to be. I'm not insinuating NC was cash bagging like the sec. Just saying things have changed

Michigan to UNC seems like a lateral move at best. Michigan's athletic department has to have way more money than UNC's. And the Big Ten is a better basketball conference now than the ACC.

I think the big domino that people are waiting on is if Bill Self will retire. That opening could trigger several other openings. Unless KU does something stupid like promote Jacque Vaughn. They should go after Otzelberger or McCollum.

Agreed. Just saying I have heard his name. I seriously doubt he would go. NC not as attractive as it once was. They might be surprised at who they can't get

I wouldn’t sniff it if I was May. He’s at a top 5 job imo. He owns Sparty and has it rolling. Why go to a place where you may not have the same success? Dumb move.

All I know is I'm pretty excited about our coach and program. It feels like we're an obvious destination for a certain type of player that wants to play in our system. Not for the prima donnas, but the guys that want to develop and play hard and have fun while doing it... come on down. I'm excited for this offseason.

I still think that...

Donovan comes back to college (UNC)
Self retires
Izzo won't retire yet (Oates will kill for that job)

KU will want Lloyd or May

If Donovan didn't come back to college for the Kentucky job, would he really come back for UNC? He seems to want to stay in the NBA.

I don't think KU will get Lloyd or May, but I do think it's a better job than UNC right now. Allen Fieldhouse is still one of the best home court/field advantages in all of sports. I think they should go after Otzelberger.

I think Otz at KU would be a great fit.

I think Donovan is just done with the Bulls but who knows.

NC is not that attractive right now. Who wants to coach that team when you have that other program 8 miles down the road that you are going to be compared to 365 days a year.....

My in laws live in Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill). I agree with everyone that NC does not spend NIL money the way some other schools do and a coach is always going to be compared to Duke, but North Carolinians are not for the most part Duke fans. In Chapel Hill you will see t-shirts referred to as The University of New Jersey and the like. I think there is strong local support for the Tar Heels. More support than they give NC State too.

I think one thing to remember that while for us fans, UNC may be "lame" for coaches that have spent their life in that profession, UNC is "that job"

Now, is that going to start to wear off, probably.

Just seems like we're seeing a sea change with coaching jobs. For decades the blue bloods mattered, the wonderful history, facilities, etc. Does that still matter? Of course. But my guess is one of the top questions from any successful and/or established coach is "Tell me the NIL situation here."

They aren't even negotiating their OWN contract at this point - but seeing what the school can afford in terms of talent. Some traditional powers and blue bloods don't have the pockets - thus, the vacancy loses its shine.

I'm not breaking any new ground here - but I do think that is 100% in play for the traditional blue bloods. Not only could NC's pockets not be super deep, but now other schools HAVE the deep pockets for NIL so coaches on the rise decide to stay instead of chase the pressure of a big name program. We don't know what Alabama football has to spend compared to Ohio State (do we?)

Anyway... just my thoughts. The key these days is the history, facility, AND money to buy a team. Sucks actually.

A North Carolina sports writer referred to it as one of the top five college coaching jobs in the country.

It has been, yes.

Is it now? We don't know because we don't know the math. From what we DO see, it's a good job but not what it used to be IMO.

Sure they do, but if you take that job you're staring at a program 8 miles down the road that is absolutely rolling with a 38 year old coach. That is crazy pressure that most coaches aren't going to want these days when they can stay at their perspective school without it.

It certainly CAN be. They have great tradition and fan support. But so does Nebraska football, and we are not a top five job right now, not even close.

ACC basketball seems to be a second-rate conference now - they really diluted the conference by adding a bunch of programs that are irrelevant in basketball - Cal, Stanford, SMU, Notre Dame.

So while UNC is still an attractive job - if you're already coaching a successful team in the Big Ten, Big 12, or SEC - there's nothing special enough about UNC to leave and try to rebuild there.

I think a lot of coaches would like to coach at a blue blood school that has had recent success. They are one of the true blue blood programs in college basketball, and they won the NCAA championship in 2017 and played in the national championship game as recently as 2022.

I agree that a lot of coaches would like to coach there. I just don't see coaches like Dusty May or Tommy Lloyd, who are already coaching successful programs in major conferences, leaving to coach there
