I searched for any existing thread and found none. Kind of surprised it hasn't garnered more discussion.

Wife finally dragged me to see it this past weekend. Have to admit, was really good. First off, there is no other woman on the face of the planet like Margot Robbie. Holy shiit does she look amazing in this. Underlying message was actually deep and thought provoking. Mattel certainly makes themselves the butt of a lot of the humor. Ryan Gosling is also tremendous. It can get a little too preachy with its wokeness at times, but an excellent movie.

And to make sure there are no flags on the field...

I saw it. Thought it sucked, as did my wife and 3 of my daughters. I was expecting it to be funny and it wasn’t. Also, I wasn’t expecting it to be a Mattel marketing device but it was. Waste of time and quite a bit of money to me.

My daughter loved it.

Woke? That seals the deal - undet no circumstances. Get enough of that nonsense. I am not going to pay for it!

Kudos to you for going in with an open mind. This is the same crowd who are happy their women’s national team lost.

I saw it with my daughter. She liked it. I wasn't expecting much but even the humor didn't land with me. I assumed I would at least laugh.

My wife wanted to see it so I took her. I give it a 6/10. It was cute and the cast was great. But it was 30 minutes too long with lots of spoofy filler scenes that added little to the plot.

The message was too preachy for me. My wife agreed. It wasn’t unimportant, but using a Barbie movie as the delivery vehicle felt off and diminished the impact. It also was a sharp right turn from a light and fun movie. Apparently, that’s Greta Gerwig’s patented formula.

Just my $0.02. The movie is over $1 billion globally so what the hell do I know?

I think if people control their expectations going in, most will be surprised to enjoy the movie. Full disclosure I have not seen it, I am going off what others have said after seeing the movie. If people expect some deep meaning movie obviously they will be disappointed.

I’m happy this women’s national team lost, but I have no interest in the Barbie movie because I know it sucks. That must make me an enigma. Or an a$$hole. 😞
BobPSU92 2024. You sir are not an a$$hole. All of us of sound mind and body, and proudly American, should rejoice in their defeat especially considering how painfully close they came to winning. Outcomes like that only strengthen the memory of the 1980 USA Hockey team victory over the USA. Stay strong

When I was little one day I was angry at my sister and cut the hair off her barbie doll.... hell hath no fury like a little girl whose Barbie just got a buzz cut. My sister still speaks of it today and the anger comes right back :ROFLMAO:

Really enjoyed it. Robbie and Gosling were amazing. Thought it was very funny. I don't get all the angst over it and anger toward it. I didn't think it was overly preachy. 8/10.
I am with you, don't get the pushback. The line about The Godfather had he rolling in the isles laughing. I am not a song/dance guy either but the dance routines were impressive as well. At the end of the day, seeing Margot dressed up in Barbie clothes is more than worth the price of admission.

Not for any particular reason, but I never remember my daughter ever expressing a desire to have a Barbie Doll. But she did ask for two of those dam "budget busting" American Girl dolls!
Yeah, that was a serious thing back in the day. When we’d visit Chicago a trip to the American Girl store for tea was de rigueur.

I’m waiting for it on video. Went to see Oppenheimer for me another video because it didn’t need to be on big screen to be good. Sex scenes in opp. With 3 daughters was tough. My daughter said I should be closing my eyes because they have those! (Breasts) 😳😲

I graduated in ‘69. My wife of 50 years and I went to see Barbie. It was fun.
It was a happening! There were several generations together. They were all dressed in pink. Some were in wheelchairs. Others used walkers.

Barbie was not as good as Oppenheimer, but, Oppenheimer was not a happening.

Changing the subject to the Women’s Soccer Team, their loss was to a team from a socialist country. Just saying.

No, and I don't have much interest. However, I have a 7-year-old daughter who I would like to take to see it but I heard it's kind of weird for young girls. Which to me seems odd since it's a frigging Barbie movie.

Sweden? A socialist country?

Time to go back to school.

They most certainly are not.

FWIW, Sweden is a parliamentary style democracy, and while they share a lot of the "social welfare" mindset of much of western Europe (and the US) - as part of a free-market economy - they are most certainly not a socialist state. In fact, their government structure calls for low corporate tax rates, to spur on free market conditions.
To fund their social welfare programs (ala Social Security, Medicaire etc here in the States) they rely on high personal income tax rates (most of which is taxed, and spent, locally - not nationally). They also, FWIW, have a primary education system which is based on "vouchers" for individuals - to be used at the type of school of the parents choosing.
If anything, the nation has been moving in ways that are less traditionally identified with "socialists": limitations on immigration, stronger requirements for cultural integration of immigrants (stronger national identity), stronger defense spending (in fact, they are in the midst of joining NATO), etc etc. In the current nomenclature of US media, they would be called budding "Swedish-Nationalist-Supremacists" :) ), and are currently led by a coalition that is increasingly conservative in many ways.

My youngest two got those. My second oldest wanted one and hasn’t let us forget that she didn’t get one while the two younger sisters did. I don’t remember my oldest expressing any interest in them.
