Texas coach Chris Beard has been arrested and charged with a third-degree felony:

Beard, 49, was charged with assault on a family or household member/impeding breath circulation, per the sheriff’s office. Officers were called to a disturbance at a home in Austin’s Tarrytown neighborhood, an Austin police public information officer said.

Say what you will about Collins, I thin he's a higher character man. Maybe Rowan will reconsider his choice.

Been a hell of a year for crimes in college basketball between this and the New Mexico St situation. Season's barely a month old!

"Hot shot disturbance" is defined by authorities as "an immediate threat to life or public safety."

Beard has an ex-wife with 3 children, and a girlfriend.

It sure sounds like Beard was trying to strangle someone, according to the charge.

It is not clear whose residence was involved.

Needless to say, this looks very bad. I hope the victim is OK.

Well, Rowan could have attended Northwestern and gotten himself a college degree to be proud of, while making an immediate impact on the basketball court...

or he could go to a school thats pretty good academically, get redshirted because he isn't needed on the basketball team and then explain to his parents why his coach is choking family members.

If Rowan re-considers, I hope Collins uses one finger to respond. Or a polite letter on purple stationery.

Honestly, I'm disappointed in myself for missing the layup that should have gone like this...

Brumbaugh bailed on NU and Coach Collins because we don't have a winning tradition and lose too many close games... so he went to Texas to play for a coach who chokes in a more literal way.

This is what they call relationship issues. As usual, it takes two to tango.

The woman told police after they arrived at a home on Vista Lane that she and Beard had been having relationship issues and had been upset with each other for several days. She said verbal arguments turned physical and that “he just snapped on me and became super violent,” per the court affidavit. KXAN reached out to Beard’s attorneys and asked for a statement as he left jail Monday, but he did not respond. We will update this story when we receive one.
The woman attributed a bite mark on her right forearm, a cut to her right eyebrow and temple, a scrape to her left leg and cut to her left thumb to Beard, per the documents.
The woman said Beard “choked me, threw me off the bed, bit me, bruises all over my leg, throwing me around, and going nuts,” per the affidavit. “I could not breathe,” she described later in the affidavit.
His fiancée told police Beard had been mad at her and hadn’t been speaking to her. When she went to check in on him in their guest room, she found him sitting on the bed and twirling his reading glasses. She told police she became frustrated, took Beard’s glasses and broke them before returning to their bedroom.
She said Beard then came into their bedroom and was upset about his broken glasses, per the affidavit. She told police she offered to buy him a new pair before he allegedly slapped the glasses she was wearing off her face, according to court documents.

This is a really terrible story, but it makes me uncomfortable that we’ve chosen to associate it with Brumbaugh. He went to a coach who wins a ton, not to one who is dangerous and violent.

I hope UT does the right thing and I hope Brumbaugh transfers to NU next month.

And there are always 2 sides to a story. Beard may have been in a bad relationship. Or he may have been abusive. Or both.

It’s just really sad.

Discretion is the better part of valor. Walk away. Separate yourself. Set boundaries.

It’s obviously a really toxic relationship that gets to reading glasses breaking and five seconds of strangulation and bite marks. But, dude, it was your glasses. You can get $2 magnifiers down the street. Walk away.

It’s really, really sad.

I hate to speculate (That's a lie. I love to speculate) but... when something escalates so quickly like this is alleged to have, I start to suspect that substances were involved. I mean biting someone? No adult in his right mind does that. Alcohol, drugs, it could be roid rage. I don't know, but that's where my mind goes.

One would think this spells the end of Beard's tenure at UT. He physically assaulted her.

He does claim to have an audio recording that frames things in a different light, but he declined to share with the police at the time (which is probably smart, if he does indeed have such a recording, to save it for his lawyer). But it's hard to imagine how that would explain away bite marks unless they turn out to be self-inflicted.

I try to withhold judgement until all the facts come out, but what we know so far certainly doesn't look good.

Note to self: if ever I feel I need to bite someone, I should be recording audio and calmly saying, "why are you biting yourself???" over and over.

Biting is disturbingly common in domestic violence cases.

My understanding from reading a bit about this around the ole ‘net is that this type of thing isn’t necessarily out of character for Beard and that he has a bit of a reputation for staying out late to participate in various legal and perhaps-not-so-legal substances. So, a bit of diligence on the man could have helped a few folks, but the UT brand shines bright enough to perhaps blind.

Obviously they’ve got to see how the interim coach does as they ‘let the legal process run its course.’

In today's world the cops will prosecute abuse with or without cooperation of the abused.

Well, the felony charge was for strangulation. They have evidence of bite marks, but they might not have physical evidence of strangulation. It might not be possible to prove.
