The Bears Training Camp was a boon to Olivet. I have to assume that at some higher up political level Governor Ryan connected parts of Soldier Field rehab with the Bears going to Bourbonnais to help Kankakee County, and they definitely have helped the community. But the end was in sight; when they started doing mostly morning practices, it was clear they were trying to cut back on public access. Going to Halas Hall will not likely make anything any better for the fans.
Olivet used the revenue for significant investment into the student & athletic facilities. The beautiful Student Life and Recreation Center would not likely have happened without the Bears - or would have taken a much longer time to do. The pool which was built as part of that project has allowed the Tigers to start a swimming team which quickly jumped to NAIA championship caliber...NAIA Mens champs in '16 & '17, runners up '14 & '15, third '13 & '18.. NAIA Womens champs in '17, runners up '18 & '16, sixth in '15, third in '14, fourth in '13.
You would think that Football would be the major benefactor, and a huge recruiting advantage. But? The Tigers best record in recent years were a couple of 6-5 seasons...Turf in 2014 was probably the biggest direct benefit to Tiger football from the Bears...
Community benefit? Sure, lots of priceless good press for the area because of the Bears, and heavy Chicago press the month or so of camp. But the financial boom did not end up what people first thought...Unlike Platteville, where Bears tourism created lots of hotel stays and multi-day trips, its only 60 miles from Olivet to Soldier Field. Other than for some press members, there was no huge jump in hotel reservations for camp - because it was close enough to be a day trip. Sure, there were some gas stations & restaurants that benefitted, but not what people were thinking when the move was announced. Lots of high school girls were surprised when they discovered they were in line at Dairy Queen across from Olivet with a Bear. TJ's & the Library, the bars across the street from Olivet, were clearly helped with patrons hoping for a Bear sighting, but the newness had rubbed off. People started avoiding the traffic problems in the area, and I've already heard comments about how it will be nice not to have Bears traffic returning in July.
