he does things that are completely irrational and more likely to get you killed than save your life. For instance, I just watched him talk about dangerous this freezing river is, then explain how to build a raft out of sticks to float down it (using a piece of plastic that was conveniently placed along the side of the river no less). Hey Bear, how about you walk down the river bank and stay dry instead of risking dying of hypothermia you dumb <17>. Survivorman is the ****.

Yeah, like the time I saw him drink stagnant water in the Amazon jungle because he was dehydrated. The next morning he had the runs and ended up even more dehydrated plus the discomfort of being sick. No doubt that guy isn't in the same league as Les Stroud.

No doubt Bear's stuff is staged (heck he has a full camera crew following him), but he is former British SAS and would quickly dismantle Les or anyone else, with the exception of Chuck Norris and Coach 34. Bear's gig is more entertainment than useful survival techniques. If you want to learn wilderness survival, better join the Scouts, Army or Marines.

but what else would you expect from a guy who hangs out with a bunch of wild grizzly bears for a living?

ETA: Stroud is the ****.

I have never EVER seen anything as ridiculous as this on TV. The things he does in this episode are beyond idiotic. Ending is hilarious.

But the man and his methods are legit.

And I didn't see anything fake about him beheading a snake, turning the carcass inside out while discarding the guts, peeing into the carcass, and using the carcass as a flask to drink is own urine.

Google that dude. He's a great big phony. That's right, this guy's a big fat phony. Discovery has edited and removed several of his episodes, and his future with the network is in limbo.

Recognize his show is more about "how to do things in certain contrived,. convenient-to-me situations in the woods".

The other guy's show is more of a no-******** reality show. Les doesn't do stupid stuff just to show you how you'd get out of a situation if you were ever in one.

Les Stroud's show is much closer to what would actually happen if you were stranded. Bear's is more of a show showing people crazy **** that you would never attempt but that is entertaining and I guess in some universe practical to survival.

However, saying Bear Grylls isn't legit is really dumb. Whether you want to admit it or not, Bear Grylls would out last Les Stroud in most situations. British SAS, combat experience, and just some the **** he does is unbelievable.

And yes, I get that his show is comprised of staged situations, that doesn't affect the man's actual accomplishments and experience.

that was before they admitted to doing stuff like that and began disclosing that events were staged and that he didn't sleep in swamps the full 5 days or whatever it is. I still think the show is awesome.

Bear Grylls never claimed he was out "roughing it." He only said he would show people how to survive in life or death situations. People saw that and expected it to be just like Stroud's show, and many were disappointed by this.

Stroud is a legit Survivorman, but only because he can't think of all the cool stuff Bear Grylls does. Stroud is a good cameraman, too, but it's not gonna make me watch his show. It seems like 15 minutes of every episode I've ever seen of Survivorman consists of Stroud talking about his feelings. If I wanted to see that I would watch Sex and the City or something lame like that. I prefer Man vs. Wild because I would much rather watch a guy slaughter a hog, bite heads off of snakes, kill rabbits with a throwing stick, pull himself out of a frozen lake, etc.

The one recently that caused me to stop watching the show, even though it was amazing was on NatGeo with the Giant Crystal Cave. These crystals were absolutely unbelievable. They were are big as tree trunks, but whoever directed the show decided they had to waste 20 minutes with a human body graphic describing how all these scientist were on the verge of death because it was 125 degrees in this cave. Even after they put on air conditioned suits the voice over still had to remind us they were going to die at any minute.

Jesse James is a Dead Man has a helicopter taking footage while he is riding on the ice road and the voice over keeps telling us how Jesse is on the verge of being stranded in this wilderness and freezing to death. Like the helicopter can't land and pick him up.
