Bednar throwing game 1

Samford is very RH heavy and has power. Could be a bad matchup for MacLeod, and I’m not sure there is anyone outside those two that you totally trust right now.
If Bednar is the better matchup for Game 1 and MacLeod is Game 2 I’m ok with it. I also realize it will be second guessed to no end, especially if we lose either of the first two games.

Not what I’d do but whatever. I guess the thinking is we need to get to 2-0 however we need to get there, and Macleod is a better matchup vs VCU/Campbell than he is against Samford.
But I’d rather have our best starter (Bednar) going against the second best team in the regional...

If we can’t beat Samford with our Friday night guy ( who at this time is probably our 2nd best rotation pitcher) OR even with a midweek starter, we aren’t going to have to worry about a SR.

The second best team in the Regional could be Samford... VCU is red hot but against a bad schedule and is probably over seeded and should’ve been a 3. Campbell had a good year but just lost two games to a bad Presbyterian team.
I don’t know that there’s a massive difference between the other three teams in the Regional. Samford has the worst RPI and record but played in a far tougher league RPI-wise.
It's the right call. Go with the matchup vs. right handed heavy lineup. Both McCleod and Bednar are 'aces'. Bednar pitches during the day, which he's used to, and McCleod gets the night game tomorrow. Both games are must-wins. All the data points say to do this.
And as far as throwing your theoretical 'best' in Game 1s, we did that in 2016 too, and it worked for us. Damn glad we did too, because it wasn't an easy game vs. that #4, can't remember who exactly it was, SEMO or something.

Either a troll or some stats showing that McLeod is going to struggle against Samford or excel against both VCU and Campbell.
According to yesterday’s Boneyard, Samford’s lineup has 8 RH and 1 switch. A quick look at VCU’s stats shows that of their top 9 hitters, 4 are LH. Not sure about Campbell.
This is strictly about matchups.
If true I am OK with it because if we are contenders we really should be able to beat anybody in this regional with any pitcher we put on the mound. Our biggest vulnerability is running into a RAT like Oltoff or whatever his name was with Tulane so I am for doing whatever we need to do to win these first two and get into a bullpen battle with whomever is left. If any one of these teams can then beat us twice under those circumstances then God bless em.
I'm not so worried about our pitching. I am worried about the other team's pitcher getting a few quick outs on us and gaining confidence against our lineup. Our guys have to get hits early and often. Jake better have them ready.
If not, we're going to have a frustrating weekend.

Meh. There have been multiple games this year where State went Don in order in the first and got runners on in the 2nd to get the Top of the order back up in the 3rd and got to the starter second time through. That has happened a few times against State starters too though. However in Hoover, you are correct. State smoked it right at guys early and the opponent got a lead and their pitcher settled in.

This is at least a fair point. Some guys are more comfortable at night and some don’t mind pitching in the day.

Its not really gonna matter who starts. Now that the tourney in Hoover is behind them they are gonna flip the switch and play winning baseball. These are the games that matter
What? On the statistical side there is no appreciable difference between Bednar and Macleod. Bednar has an ERA about 0.4 lower and a WHIP about 0.1 lower. While slightly better, he’s been nowhere close to a typical matchup proof ace. If Lemonis likes Bednar better against Samford’s lineup, that should be good enough reason to start him.
Is it possible that Lemonis is also treating this like it is Bednars turn in the rotation, since he followed MacLeod and only pitched a couple of innings last Thursday? Just spitballing here. I’m sure it has more to do with their RH heavy lineup than not trusting MacLeod. It is obvious he plans to throw MacLeod in game 2.
