You won't be able to do this next year, anyway. They will throw the 'welfare of the student athlete' thing around and get a ncaa rule against it. It won't just be the sec that doesn't like it and wants it gone. Jmo
Before the trip started I was 99.9% convinced that this would be one time thing also. However, the narrative in the media has been the exact opposite of what the SEC and NCAA were hoping for. The kids are loving it and so far (knock on wood) Michigan and the players have done this 100% clean. There are already rumors floating around, from reliable sources, that a handful of other schools have put out feelers to locations for next year (including at least one big name school).
Now here is something to look out for...this whole thing has been planned out more than you might think. Because Michigan is starting a week early and a week of it is while they are not in class, Michigan has decided to go straight through on its practice schedule instead of giving the players periodic breaks. The reason for this is that means spring practice will end a good couple weeks before finals instead of running through it. This doesn't guarantee the kids take advantage of it but the hope is that the program can further kill "the welfare of the student-athlete" argument by showing an uptick on team GPA.
Everything about this has been orchestrated. Do you think the dozen or so times Harbaugh has mentioned how he is giving his team a "SOBER" spring break hasn't been intentional? Do you think Harbaugh has made every single practice open to the media (so they can see the kids having fun) out of the kindness of his heart? I mean come on, this is a guy who is notorious for giving the media almost zero access ever. I can go on with some of the tactics they are using but the overall strategy, all along, has been to build a case against "the welfare of the student-athlete" argument. We'll see if it works and/or if the NCAA comes up with another argument to kill future trips.
P.S.
I don't know for sure...but speaking of this thread...I don't think the fact that Harbaugh responded (on twitter) to the one coach whose school is involved in a rape scandal and not the other two who started the whole twitter conversation was exactly a random decision.
