Benches on Upper Decks

How about putting benches in the concession area of the upper deck, so that elderly and not so elderly fans that need to get out of the heat for health reasons don’t have to stand or sit on the concrete floor while doing so. I saw quite a few people yesterday leaning or sitting on the ground against the outer fence, clearly struggling because of the heat. The benches could be placed against the outer fence (opposite the concession stands) wherever food carts are not located. People are already sitting or standing in those areas anyway, so putting benches there wouldn’t change pedestrian flow and would be appreciated by those that need to sit down.

Remembered that there are bench seats in the shade in the upper deck closest to the scoreboard

Benches are a nice idea, although against the fence on the east side is in the teeth of the sun from late morning through late afternoon; maybe they could create a small shaded bench area somewhere on the concourse, perhaps near the ends where there is less foot traffic.

years ago there were some picnic tables up top at the ends of the concourse...the lack of any concessions at that time was the primary reason my group wanted to move downstairs...i preferred the view of the field from that level..

I’ve come to believe that it’s going to take someone to die from heatstroke at an early September noon start, and all the negative attention it will bring, before RU and the B1G address the problems.

If one assumes a 3 hour tailgate, the hours from 9 am to 3 pm (12 pm kickoff) are, on average, cooler than the hours from 12:30 pm to 6:30 pm (3:30 pm kickoff), as the hottest time of day is usually between 3 and 5 pm in late summer. If just looking at gametime, it's close to a wash. Point being that 3:30 pm games are as hot or hotter than 12 pm games and definitely hotter if including tailgate time. That's why I want all 9 pm kickoffs in early/mid Sept, so it's starting to cool down a bit by 6 pm and much cooler for the games.

An older lady was laying on the ground around noon in the middle of the east entrance lines. EMTs were helping her, hope she was ok.

When are people going to realize that RU doesn’t put much thought into things like that which benefit fans? Remember those basketball games a few years back when the paths into the RAC from outer parts of the parking lot weren’t cleared of slush and ice?

Speaking as someone who struggles with Vasovagal Syncope, I can say that on a hot sunny September day a noon start is significantly harder to deal with than a 3:30 one.

For a 3:30 start fans can skip the tailgate or find a cool shelter, as needed, and later not suffer with the worst hours of a blazing sun during gametime. There’s almost no avoiding the worst of the sun if you are in the stands for a noon game. I pretty much have to take a pass on attending those games.

Agree. When the new stadium opened we were upper deck west side. Then we moved to upper deck east side when we changed home team side. Loved the view from both seats. We moved down to the lower deck this season since some of our group are less mobile and the seats are fine but can’t match the view from above, in my opinion.

I agree. Our seats were upper deck east side and we really enjoyed it. I think it's best if you're sitting in the first handful of rows, personally.

That’s where I sit, Row 3 Seats 5 & 6.

Best ones in house IMO: aisle for a quick easy out, high enough to see everything.

And as some of you have mentioned earlier, there were picnic tables under 218.

Isn't this occurring literally every year at most stadiums both College and NFL?

Is the argument from some that all football games in the country not happen in the afternoon?
Seems a little bit excessive.

Nobody made that argument.

What fans have said in this thread and many other threads is that RU needs to make adjustments with its policies and/or practices.

There needs to be personal responsibility. Check the temp, wear light clothes, a hat, sun glasses, sun block and hydrate before going to the game. If you don’t do well in the heat, you need to have a plan to leave your seats and find shade for a few minutes. People in my section were moving to the tunnel area to get shade and a breeze throughout the day. Adjust tailgate times etc.

The only policy RU should change is the ability to bring in outside water bottles on very hot days. $5 per bottle in the stadium is expensive.

Upper deck, west side there’s no room for benches. The fence area was in the sun all day. No room for benches up against the wall because of concessions and bathroom lines. Not sure if the picnic table was under 201-202 area but there is usually a table.

NJ.com/Star Ledger are licking their chops for a story like that. Shouldn't there be some seats at the top of the lower section under the overhang designated for people that need the shade for medical reasons? Seems reasonable.

If you have a diagnosed condition RU makes some accommodations. For example, I can bring in whatever refreshments I need, within reason.

But heat stroke can unexpectedly sneak up on anyone. Even people who think they’ve prepared for it. And some of the first symptoms that can hit are disorientation and confusion, so a victim often doesn’t realize what is happening and the danger they are in. Then things can very very quickly escalate.

I saw a man have what looked like a cardiac event probably ~14 years ago in the upper deck. It took about 15-20 minutes for help to arrive. He looked blue. Not sure what happened but it was scary how bad the response was.

Well if they had listened to rutgersal we'd have a dome over the stadium and climate controlled seating.

Anyone with mobiity issues should get tickets in the lower bowl. Even with ramps, the climb to the upper deck is not an easy one, and when you get there, there may be stairs to climb to the seats.

Devils advocate here but why would they allow you to bring in outside water when the sell water. It's a money making operation not charity. Just sayin

That may be true for an overall temperature. But it’s when you are in direct sun that feels much hotter and 3:30 starts have the sun on its way down the west sky. They are much more comfortable.
I sit on the East side and sunglasses are a must though.
As for tailgating time it doesn’t matter. That’s what canopies are for.

True on the sun angle, in general, but not for everyone. For those of us on the east side, for a noon start the sun is to our backs and left sides during the first half, which isn't so bad and doesn't really come right at us until the 3Q. For a 3:30 pm start, the sun is right at us the whole game, although definitely a bit weaker/lower, especially in the 2nd half. Again, that's why I'd prefer 8 pm starts if given a choice, as the sun is my enemy, lol.

Maybe they should install pay toilets, too.

On a scorching hot day like Sunday was water is a necessity, not a luxury.

Do they still have mist'ers to cool you down. Knowing the weather in advance they should be fired if they run out of water....but it is a for profit event. Did it for 20yrs I know how hot it gets I was on the sun side lower level which is hotter than up top. Sun side sucks for hot games but comes in handy for cold games
