After seeing just how good Simeon truly was. That makes me wonder. Who else has been that good? Phillips is right up there too. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there has been any other dominate CPS schools besides Simeon and Phillips?

In 1983, Chicago Tilden got to the Class 5A (of 6 classes then) semis and lost to eventual state champ Glenbard West 14-6. They were led by Sun-Times Player of the Year, Dempsey Norman, a 5-7 skill offensive athlete. When moved to DB the spring after his freshman year playing WR, he left the Michigan State program. After a couple other stops, he eventually got back on the field at College of St. Francis and was an 11th round draft choice for the 1990 NFL Cardinals. His last playing was for Barcelona in the World League of American Football.

Morgan Park 2007
They had D1 talent all over the field

Dunbar 1996
Rocky Harvey was amazing

Morgan Park in 2004 was expected to win the whole enchilada and was upset by CG in the semifinals at Gately. They had numerous D1 recruits, and their QB went on to Notre Dame. On paper they should have won that game and advanced to the finals.

This was awful. In the early days of live streaming, I remember Demetrius Jones throwing a vertical route about 15 times. One of the worst coaching jobs I’ve seen. Cary Grove had no business being in that game but won.

No quarters/semi-final bid = not in discussion. Simeon team that lost to HF (2015?) in semis at Gately, Phillip's team that beat Althoff, Hubbard semi team, and MP 2004

Taft teams of the the late 50’s early 60’s with Al McFarlane and Jim Grabowski were pretty good. Jim Jacobs of Grease fame, Donna Mills and Jerry Krause would’ve been Eagles around that time too.

Has to be the 1937 Austin team, drew the largest crowd ever for a football game.

The crowd was estimated at 115,000 in 1937 for the Austin/Leo game.
https://soldierfield.net/stadium-history

Remember then the field was in the middle of the stadium and not pushed to the south end. The north end was open not closed off which happened after the Bears moved there. My dad was a policeman in the 60's and 70's and worked several other events there. Before the field was chopped up there was a track around the field and they had several small stock car races there on the same scale as Raceway Park and Santa Fe speedway

Many of the CVS teams in the 60's and early 70's gave as good as they got. Their Coach Bernie O'Brien worked for the Park District during the summer and was scouting for kids all summer. CVS and Lane Tech were considered open boundary schools with them spiting up the city in half. The CPS championship games were great back then with large crowds.

I was at the 63 Prep Bowl as a 6th grader when the 63 Rita team beat a very strong CVS team before 81, 270. That's before the bears put up the north stands.

The stories of the huge Prep Bowl (known more popularly as "The City Championship") crowds are true, but require some analysis.

The game was the pride and joy of Chicago politicians, especially the Chicago Park District (which ran and runs Solder Field - along with the McCaskeys).

All Park district employees (and there were thousands and thousands) had to buy ten tickets to the game and were under severe pressure to insure that all tickets were actually used. It's likely that all vendors and anyone seeking favor bought blocks..

The game was very popular in its own right, but not as much as some believe.

I was at the 1960 game when Mt Carmel ran over the Taft team (with McFarlane and Grabowski). Taft had beaten Dick Butkus's CVS team the week before.

Grabowski, BTW, was all set to attend Weber, but was 5 minutes late for the entrance exam. Some brother wouldn't let him into the exam and he wound up at Taft. True story

Way before my time but I always thought that Grabowski would be a natural at Weber. One of Weber’s all time greats Tim Marshall was within a mile of Taft. Great story. I hope that brother was defrocked after the incident.

I know you’re right about the Prep Bowl story because I’ve heard similar stories. I’ve heard that the precinct captains were expected to buy tickets to the Prep Bowl.

What can't you believe about 75-100 thousand attending the games as opposed to the minimal crowds today!

Can you confirm or deny that Pilot washed his hands instead of his face?

I have no idea what you're talking about, and the guy's name was "Pilate." If it's some sort of millennial joke, you're wasting your time.

That was a bad typo ... but that’s a Boomer joke ... It’s a line from Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones.

as best cps teams
I would say that morgan park had a winning culture there for about 10+yrs. and they had very good teams. were very competitive, no matter who they played and had some deep runs teams. what was the coaches name(spurlock) or something like that. he had all of the players focused not only on sports but academics also. and completely turned the culture around.
then I would say simeon, hubbard, and then phillips(only because they won recently) they need to have multiple years of success.

The old timers loved the Prep Bowl. My Dad used to take me every year no matter who was playing. Seems like it was always freezing cold. Crowds were never that big in the 80s. A couple thousand maybe.
