1956 Jackson Burley Bears outscored opponents 264-0 en route to a 9-0 VIA state championship.
http://www.maupintown.com/colorlineofscrimmage.html - Local guy put together a film, This is the trailer. When I find an accessible full copy, I'll try to post it. You can learn a great history lesson, hopefully make you dig up some old dirt from your area after reading.
I live a few blocks away from Burley, which was sold by Cville City to Albemarle County and now serves Albemarle County Middle school students, who are bused to the school square in the middle of the city, who will attend either Albemarle or Monticello HS.
I learned a lot about the VIA as a teenager as 5 of my 7 aunts and uncles attended Susie B Gibson HS in Bedford in the 50s and 60s and they would show me scrapbooks with sports articles.
Cville football has been rather down this century and I am hopeful that we've turned a corner for these kids and community. Coach Sherry is always mentioning to our boys how "winning is your DNA," and most of the boys aren't completely aware of the history and tradition of some of those who came before them. Between some of Burley teams and the Lane teams (White HS), the game is certainly in the genetics here, just a matter of us getting the kids to embrace it, work to preserve the tradition and build their own legacy.
http://viaheritage.com/ - Link to VIA Website, shows lists of all 115 member schools. I challenge you to dig up something on the school in your area, provide some stories or personal memories of your own as we twittle our thumbs waiting for July 28!!!
