In 2012 Loyola traveled to Dublin Ireland for a football game. I see on their web page the basketball team is in Naples, Florida right now. I wonder how many football fans became basketball fans for the week. Since basketball teams are much smaller road trips are less expensive.

What is the best road trip you took as a player for football? What is the best road trip the team you support has taken? How about you basketball teams?

As a player actually Loyola was the farthest we traveled.

St. Rita has made the trip to Brother Rice High School Bloomfield Hill Michigan. In 2008 they went to Cincinnati to play in the tournament that Kirk Herbstreit sponsored. 2009 they were supposed to play in Canton Ohio at the Hall of Fame but funding dried up after the stock market crash.

The basketball team is in New Orleans now playing in the Sugar Bowl Classic and they have a trip to Alaska to play in the Alaska Airlines Classic at the end of the month. The baseball team is playing at Bishop Gorman ACC Tournament Las Vegas, NV, and the wrestling team just got back from Minnesota Christmas Tournament in Rochester, MN. Last year the Lacrosse team played in Nashville, TN and at Notre Dame in South Bend.

Reavis, Oak Lawn or Evergreen Park out to then-tiny Lincoln Way HS (now Central campus) in the days of the old SWSC was a "road trip" 50+ years ago long before any of the N/S or E/W roads were much beyond rural 2-lane routes. At least the traffic of the present day out that far was not such an issue.

Althoff took a 24-hour bus ride to Houston last year - kids documented it and seemed to have fun.

I enjoyed two trips south on 55 with title in hand. Stopped both years at Old Country Buffet in Springfield for a big meal and then back to home for continued boozing that began as soon as we got in the bus.

Paducah was unique - we played them there senior year on a Saturday. The local schools wanted to see the match up and everyone else played on Fridays, so that was the biggest crowd in front of which we ever played. Including state.

Naples FL, and New Orleans? Who pays for this?

The head basketball coach was asked about that at our December Alumni Luncheon. As far as the basketball team trips to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic and the Alaska Air Lines Classic there is a team stipend from the event sponsor. But it doesn’t cover the whole cost. That’s where parents pockets and fund-raising comes in.

There are more fees to go the a CCL school then there are taxes on my cable/phone/internet bill.

Youth football we went to Kentucky at the end of every year. Good times! Maine South besides Champaign the only other one I can think of was Warren Central Indiana. Serious beat down occurred. Probably the best high school team I’ve ever seen. They had swagger that would make the Hurricanes of the 80’s proud. I’ll never forget we ran a bubble screen and the safety who was 15 yards deep dropped our stud receiver for a 3 yard loss.

best road trips were lacrosse. We'd go to Maryland and Virginia on spring break and usually a long weekend to long island. (via air). Having downtime in another city between games was best for cameraderie.

Sounds like Lacrosse is now the primary sport for a lot of kids, not just for football players out of season. I like to see Lacrosse go league wide with the CCL/ESCC merger.

My oldest nephew played in the 7A title game in 2006 for SR. He says the trip back of unforgettable. But he says the trip back from O'Fallon earlier that year was painful. His ribs and jaw hurt so much - from laughing for 6 hours.
