If I were to find myself in Natchez next week needing to head toward Auburn via Meridian, what would my best option be?

Natchez to Hazlehurst to pick up 55, then up to Jackson and over?
Natchez to Laurel on 84, then up 59 to Meridian?
Natchez to Hazlehurst to Mendenhall to Morton to catch 20?

I drive 280 from Birmingham to Auburn a lot, so I am conditioned to a few towns with some stop and go but still want to make the trip as reasonable in length as possible. Ten or 15 minutes won't matter to me either way.

Or you can take the hwy from Natchez to Brookhaven then up. It's a better (4 lane) road but might take a few minutes longer. Been a while since I lived down there so I can't remember the name of the Hwy that runs past Meadville, Bude, etc. but it's a really nice road comapred to the one going to Hazelhurst.

There are still a couple of short 2 lane stretches, but most towns are by-passed and you can make good time.

I grew up in Natchez and went to college at Troy State, which is relatively close to Auburn. Unfortunately for you, there is no good way to get anywhere from Natchez unless you're heading to Baton Rouge. Hwy 84 from Natchez to Brookhaven is all 4 lane and it's quicker than Hwy 28 to Hazelhurst.

Either 84 to Brookhaven, or 28 to Hazlehurst, won't make much difference, especially given the length of your trip. I wouldn't go to Laurel. I am from Natchez, live in Flowood, and have had the pleasure of attending Fort Benning several times. Personally, I'd go through Hazlehurst. It's the quickest way to the Jackson metro area. I've been making the drive to Jackson fairly regularly for about 25 years now.

have a meditation at the Purple Church about the good times, go to the Pink Pony and then head south on 55 - hit 82 East then hit 45.

I like the drive on the Trace from Natchez to Jackson. Its relaxing. You won't be looking at your watch every 10 minutes.

From Jackson, of course, its I-20 to Meridian?

Are about the same. Most of 84 is four-laned, which cuts the trip to Laurel significantly. However, going 84 to 55 to Jackson and taking 20 over will allow you to drive faster if you're into that sort of thing. You can mostly likely get away with going fast enough to cut the difference in miles.

The route that takes you closest to Hattiesburg so you can see ya BOY!!!!! Seriously, 84 to Collins....swoop down to Hattiesburg, let me buy you, the Misses and that cute little tax-write off lunch/dinner and then get on I-59 and head to Meridian or I can just meet ya in Laurel.
