Pulled my selections from this list, based on # of units so as to get the most widely available options.
I'm sure we all have some local place that's out of this world...this isn't about that. Just what's the best damn sandwich we can all conceivably go get. I confined the choices only to the ones we have in Lexington . Arby's is on their list but I consider them like a fast food burger place, not a sandwich place,, so to speak. Poll options do not let me add any more choices than I gave, so Newk's and Cosi both got left off.

For me, the onions ruin Penn Station. I can smell them 2 city blocks away. I don't know where they get them, but I've never encountered anything like them.

At Jersey Mike's, are you getting hot subs?

I prefer a hot sub.
Jersey Mike’s is pretty good but I like WhichWhich.

Penn Station sausage is too salty and I think their bread seems undercooked.

I love onions. So thats a plus for me. Mmm meat onions peppers all sizzling. Who doesn't love that smell?


I've had hot and cold at Jersey Mike's. I'm the "insides" of their sandwiches are good, but their bread sucks IMO.

I’m just the opposite. I love the bread at Jersey Mikes and hate the bread at Penn Station. I love the fries at Penn Station, but think their sandwiches are very mediocre.

* Jersey Mike's
* Farhouse (Firehouse)

Of course, any of them can easily be topped by a good, locally owned deli.

The Jersey Mike's "Mike's way" plus hot pepper relish pushes it to #1 for me, best mass produced style of Italian sandwich imo. Others on that list have their place but that sammich when craved hits the spot

I'll have to try that one. In fairness to JM's I've not had their Italian. An Italian from Jimmy Johns with their hot peppers for lunch today was in fact the inspiration for this thread. Got me thinking about just what is the best damned sandwich place around here.

I've had all of them and I'd say they all offer something tasty. JM's is the only one I just don't get, and to see that this has come down to essentially my fav, Penn Station, v them, says I have to give them another shot for redemption.

Also hilarious that Subway has the most franchises of any restaurant on Earth, and not a single person picks them. That says a lot.

Subway sandwiches have so little meat in them that a vegetarian can eat them.

Those Penn Station onions...I don't love that smell. Reminds me of a hobo's BO and some cheap tobacco my uncle smoked.

First off.. buying a sub from a chain..



But if I have to pick, it's likely DiBella's. They have some locations in Ohio and Indiana, close to some of you, but not Kentucky.

Cold Cut City on West 231st in the Bronx, Rocky's Deli in Millwood NY... but THE best sub is called the "Dangerous Dom" from Genoa Importing, Latham NY.

I probably eat Jimmy Johns more than the rest because they deliver really quick and they have good jalapeno chips. But their 'cuban sandwich' is an abomination. If I were Cuban I'd sue for defamation.

Of the one's I've been to, I would rank it as below

1. Jersey Mikes
2. McAlister's Deli
3. Subway

Only been to once so not enough data to determine, but clearly better than Subway:
Jason's Deli
Quizno's

Quiznos were good at the beginning. The franchisees had to buy their ingredients exclusively from the company but the company jacked up the prices so high that the stores could not compete. There are very few of them left. Good subs but a lousy business model.
