I've been looking through the plans this morning. It's going to be an impressive facility. Full parking garage underneath. Four courts. Incredibly nice matching office suites on the mezzanine level for both men's and women's, complete with kitchen prep areas and conference rooms. But the tie-in with the Hump is the best part. The foyer/stairwell area that adjoins the existing building is going to be spectacular if they finish it out with the materials listed.

I only have 2 questions... As best I can tell the only 3 contractors invited to bid are West Brothers, Jesco and Harrell. Are those the only contractors that we have a relationship with?

Also, what is the budget for the project? Because I can't believe the project will be valued for as little as what I see listed. In other words, I bet the bids will come back well above what it appears we are prepared to spend.

Oh.... in typical M-State fashion though... we have found a reason to chop down the lone old-growth tree anywhere near The Hump.

and I know these things are a big recruiting tool. However, don't you think that basketball practice facilities would take away a little bit of the home court advantage? I think this may have been discussed before, but I am a firm believer that being familiar with the shooting background can play a big role in home court advantage. It stands to reason that if you aren't practicing on your actual game court, you lose some of that familiarity.

Just a thought. Obviously they are the latest fad though. I saw ours this weekend, and the exterior is almost complete.

It is nice. I also thought it was strange for them to limit themselves to 3 contractors. As you have mentioned, it may be hard to get it done for what MSU has to spend. That's why limiting the number of contractors is even more puzzling.

Bruiser has a point. Practicing in Tad Smith Coliseum helps prepare them for games in all kinds of weather, too.

My thoughts exactly. But then... I've never solicited donations from people and then been in a position to take bids on work that will provide those same people with livelihoods, but I imagine that's a sticky situation.

Have to remember, this is as good as time to build as ever.
Recently on other projects such as the Alabama expansion that is about to start came back a full $15 million under the proposed cost
due to the change in prices at this time.

Xeno, I'm very intrigued by the details you gave. especially the parking garage underneath..
that plays in PERFECTLY for the ideas I have thrown around with baseball expansion,
as hopefully they will make a spot for the visitors to enter, and park the bus in there,
like several other schools have done.

Cant wait to see ground breaking, there are some stakes for a general layout in the ground
in the front that have been there about a month at least i noticed.

I saw that Bama's endzone construction came in at something like 10 million under budget since the economy is down, people are getting construction done for much less than anticipated. That could be the reason why we can get it done for X amount of dollars.

I have no idea why we would limit ourselves to 3 contractors.

They are much more than just a "fad". They are a necessity if you intend on having a big time program. Right now the mens and womens basketball teams have to use one facility for games and practices. They also have to use the same training room/locker room for both. Having a practice facility will make life a lot easier for all parties involved. Just because you and your grandpaw pulled it off "back in the day" during your high school glory days doesn't mean that college athletes in todays game have to put up with and practice in such conditions. This along with the obvious recruiting advantages it will present make this facility a must have in todays world. Latest "Fad"? How out of touch are you? As for shooting back drops, if it made that big of a difference wouldn't it be noticeable during tournament play? The shooting percentages may have a slight difference but I doubt it is anything drastic. "I am a firm believer" - Ok great, that means nothing to me or anyone else believe it or not.

Now that Billy Begley is gone we could use Ben Hansbrough to hold down the last seat on the bench and be a human victory cigar.

We had an office building bid 4 months ago come in 25% lower then what it bid for 18 months earlier. Contractors are hungry right now. Now really is the time to build if you have the money.

As for why there is only 3 contractors bidding, I couldn't say. Makes no sense to me at all- the more competition the better. It's my understanding that any government job should be open to bid by anyone- provided they have the necessary requirements and capabilities set forth in the notice to bid. Only thing I can think of is that this is being paid for entirely with private money and therefore isn't a government job- even though it is being built on government property.

However there is another side of the coin to all this "contractors are hungry" stuff. Jobs are being bid so low right now that I bet you'll start seeing large contractors going tits up in the middle of jobs and the owners left holding the bag.

It's been happening all over in the residential market. Logic says the commercial market isn't far behind.

I wonder how the property thing is handled then- is the BC leasing the property on campus or do they plan on donating it to MSU once complete?

Do you know if the BC is requiring a performance bond to protect themselves? If not they may have required a financial report from contractors to ensure they were in good shape....

...of excavation on that site in the coming months. If anyone has a dire need for a few truck loads of extremely expansive clay in the near future, I imagine whoever wins the contract would put it on them right!

Nothing on the plans specifies what that is nor that it is to be built. I wouldn't count on it it being there.

and as we renovate The Hump to match the practice facility, we can move on down to Dudy Noble and do the same for the exterior of the grandstand....

I know that Jesco is owned I think by Yates so you can be assured they will be competitive. They are doing most of the big jobs for the government on the coast.

Hate to agree with a Rebel, but there are many advantages to practicing on your own home playing court versus a practice facility. Just as in the old Boston Garden, I feel sure there are spots in the floor that don't "bounce right or are dead." The rims also have different bounces as does the backboard. The open space at the end of the baseline and side court has to be considered as well as the surroundings noted by Rebel. As far as tournament time, MOST OF THE TIME it is a neutral court to both.

about this.

The only thing that chages in basketball is backgrounds. Everything else is the same. I would be extremely happy if the men still practiced in the Hump and the women finally got their own practice facility instead of leftover time.

Would be the best for both squads</p>
