Big 12 mood check

So I had some down time this morning and thought I would check some of the Big 12 leftovers’ fan sites. Here are the overall moods:

1) TCU- by far the most confident that they will get an invite from a major conference, I’d say the sentiment is about 50/50. Half the posters feel good about a PAC-12 invite, while the others think a merger between the Big 12 and AAC is likely.
2) Iowa State- pretty pessimistic overall. Most of the posters question why the media thinks they’re headed for the B1G. Prevailing thought seems to be that they’re headed for AAC/Mountain West.
3) Baylor- very negative overall. Most of the posters seem resigned to AAC/Mountain West.
4) Kansas State- by far the saddest of all the fan bases. Collectively, they’ve already thrown in the towel.

So my question for the board is this. Are super conferences in the best interest of college football overall? Seems like there’s a good chance that the overall viewership for the sport could suffer, not to mention the shuttering of other programs across the country.

People brighter than us are looking at the numbers. KSU football is not getting a lot of eyeballs now. Neither is Baylor or TCU. They will likely suffer, but the upside for OU and Texas playing in the SEC will increase viewership and dollars overall by a helluva lot. You can bet on that.

I don't think so. I think college football as a whole was better 10 years ago when the Big 12, SEC and ACC had 12 teams, the Big 10 had 11 and the PAC-10 had 10. You'd need a few tweaks here and there (Louisville to Big 10?). But overall, I think that's a better system. I'm just glad we're in the SEC and the SEC is the conference leading all this. Cause truth is, we're not all that different from those TCU, Iowa St., Baylor and Kansas St. schools except for conference affiliation.

You had better be making plenty of $$$ off of football to be in a super conference. Football already pretty much travels by charter air anywhere that isn't within a couple hundred miles, but imagine the cost of every lesser sport with regard to having to travel all over the country to play. The economics of it will be very interesting to watch.

Super conferences are not in the best interest of college football overall. But there is no institution looking out for college football. There are individual schools looking out for their interests, conference offices looking out for their conferences interests, and then the NCAA, which has for a long time basically just looked out for the interests of the individuals working at the NCAA, which leaves them incapable of providing any leadership.

Nothing on Oklahoma State? They are by far the most desirable of the remaining Big 12 schools. They maybe would even be another SEC target if they could find an ACC team (UVA, Va Tech, UNC, NC State, FSU, or Clemson) to also go with them. But that’s unlikely due to the ACC’s TV contract stipulations. So the B1G or ACC seem more likely for them. I’m betting the ACC is kicking the tires on OSU and WVU, with B1G doing the same for OSU and either Kansas or Iowa State. PAC 12 would do well to add Texas Tech and TCU to get a firm foothold in the Texas market. Not sure what happens with Baylor or K-State.

Everything happening now will make the elite rich get richer and everyone else (including others in a power conference) poorer relatively speaking. No attempt to reform scholarship numbers, unlimited NIL money going out to existing players and recruits, and being able to instantly transfer as a free agent from one school to another will ALL work to drive a significantly deeper talent gap between the rich and the poor. From a competition standpoint, college football is and will continue to be the worst major sports product out there because everything going on will continue to make the best teams better and the worst teams worse. Remember the 4 game stretch last year where Bama outscored SEC opponents Auburn (42-13), Kentucky (63-3), MSU (41-0) and Tennessee (48-17) by a combined score of 194-33? Well, expect to see a lot more of THAT going forward.

Maybe so, but Texas is 7-1-1 versus Alabama all time, and if Texas rights then ship then the games will probably be competitive. Texas has been accused of playing to the level of its competition and that applies both ways.

Consider the LSU v Texas game when Burrow and LSU won it all. That game was close and competitive at a time when Texas was down.

My point: the best thing about the Texas and OU moves to the SEC will be the addition of some interesting games and I’d include Leach and the Dogs v Texas in those games that will get a lot of viewers.

Yep, I agree. I’m certainly glad state seems to be remaining in the have group but I can’t help but think college football as a whole is worse for this. As odd as it is to say, I think maybe college football was better when it was largely a regional sport.

The Rich will definitely get richer but we won't exactly be poorer for being a part of this.

This is kind of humorous from GoEmaw (KState) in early June they were talking about picking up Arkansas..and “Plus, if we took them on, we'd have the option of getting rid of Baylor, which still has no business being in a P5 conference. ” lol…

Maybe so, but Texas is 7-1-1 versus Alabama all time, and if Texas rights then ship then the games will probably be competitive.

Bama vs TX is 1-1 in the last 48 years. The natty tally in the same time frame is 9-1 Bama.

The only teams in the SEC that TX does not have an all time winning record against is State, SC, and Vandy.

I heard today that there was talk of the other conferences suddenly deciding against an expanded playoff and keeping it at four teams in an effort to try and stop the SEC from expanding. There is a rumor that Barry Alvarez floated the idea to Kevin Warren of the Big 10.

NIL isn’t going to be good for any of the Big 3 men’s sports.
