Can Nebraska PLEASE add varsity hockey already???

Yes, I know they have a club team. They also have a club Quiddich team. Not the same thing.

love Hockey - but thinking about the $

Neb has the smallest enrollment outside of NW in the BIG (Neb would only be the 7th or 8th largest school in the Mountain West)- we can't/shouldn't fund everything - continue to invest everything you can in football and basketball. You can even make an argument that we spend too much on baseball (kills me to say) when you consider ROI. The only 2 sports that matter in major college athletics are football and basketball.

I believe if you add hockey you need to add the same # of scholarships to a women's sport as well.

Wow, didn't realize Nebraska was behind even Purdue.

I agree that it just wouldn't make much economic sense for UN-L to add Hockey, and you bring up the biggest point, Title 9 issues.

Yikes, nice stuff there, though I hate the content. I'll just say what everyone is thinking reading that, "Bitches"...Kidding, I love women. Just don't like the fact we have to consider that stuff now.

Since the post is about Notre Dame hockey joining the Big Ten...
My question is, why does everyone allow ND to pick and choose their conference affiliation in different sports? Sooner or later, the power conferences need to get together and tell the Irish, "either join our conference for every sport, or don't join for any sport!"
It's no wonder ND stays independent. They have the luxury of being in any conference they want, any time they want, for any sport they want!

The B1G said "no" a couple of times previously when Notre Dame asked to join as a hockey only member. Why they said "yes" this time is anyone's guess. There must be a reason much bigger than simply providing a nice geographic home for the Notre Dame hockey program. The B1G does not need Notre Dame or Texas fwiw.

I think the Big Ten is just trying to strengthen its hockey conference. Notre Dame brings a great program and also eyeballs for the BTN (not that they air a lot of hockey now, anyway).

Regarding your last sentence, perhaps the league doesn't "need" either Texas or ND, but every single conference in this country would take either school if they had an interest to join. There is so much money to be made off both of those programs and as we know, money drives everything today.

Money may drive much of what an elite conference does in the expansion arena but conference stability and "playing nice" with membership is more important to many of us. Notre Dame and Texas are poison from the stability and playing nice perspectives. As we move forward it should be about the conference not two self centered athletic programs -- the conference table is round not rectangular with Texas and Notre Dame sitting at the head of the table. Also, while Texas would be an addition from a funded research dollars perspective, Notre Dame doesn't bring jack. I would agree with your point as it was in effect prior to the expansion round that brought UNL, then Rutgers and Maryland into the B1G. Texas and Notre Dame have shown their hand, many, many of us want no part of them. And, again, we don't need them. As a matter of conjecture, the day will come where they need us -- watch and see.

I would support hockey at NU big time.
There are some big time boosters that would as well. The AD under Osborne has already attempted to start a women's club team to go with the men's UNL club hockey team. There is a reason the Breslow Ice Center is being built near PBA and it isn't just about youth hockey and figure skating.

needed to bring some excitement to the conference---asap. not a diehard fan of hockey, but, have followed it somewhat. since the start of the big ten conference, i am stunned when i come across gopher hockey on tv and see the number of empty seats. used to be one of the hardest tickets to get. couple of times when i checked it out, i seriously doubt the arena was half full. maybe in time the crowds will bounce back, but, it has been a hot topic on the radio up there (as far as whether forming the conference was a good idea).

Ughh Hockey? The sport whose professional league had to settle for what The Food Network for their playoffs and championship series?

Would rather have east coast snob lacrosse as well.
