Opening weekend. Players suspended. New QB. A lot of new faces on D. And a 10 point win in a virtual home game for Louisiana State....

Oh wait. I thought it was LSU in alternate uniforms. We're 17'd.

Not going to lie, this is not the kind of game JoMo needed to win a lot of fans back over

Plenty of offense, good running game, good passing game. It will continue to gel. Defense will get better. Lots of freshmen playing. Relax.

I realize it's taboo for some reason to point out truthful things about the offense right now, but some information for you to consider:

This year Tommy Stevens vs ULL: 20/30 236 yds passing
Last year Nick Fitzgerald vs ULL: 14/21 243 yds passing

Total offense vs. ULL 2018: 331 rushing 276 passing 607 total
Total offense vs. ULL 2019: 261 rushing 236 passing 497 total

Plus we saw some of the same fundamental mistakes offensively we saw all last year.

I think Tommy Stevens will be very good for us and yes, I like the way he looks throwing the ball. But I'd hold off before I proclaim this offense as much better.

5 penalties in game one - that’s a positive, right?

Technically, yes, but we were very undisciplined, much like last year. I saw several instances where State could have gotten flagged but didn't.

It’s a win in week one vs an FBS opponent. In the last decade we’re 4-3 in that scenario. Including a home loss to USA and a real ugly win vs. Southern with a 5th year senior Dak. Two of the four wins were Memphis back when the memory of Croom was still fresh. I’ll take the W and move on to next week.

Not really sure how year over year comparisons like that are totally relevant. Is it as simple as Stevens our performing Fitz’s passing line of 11/27 for 150 yards vs. K State to indicate improvement? La-La was the third game of the season and at home last year. I just don’t get why we’re so hellbent on all hope being lost. Was the offense amazing? Hell no, but I saw more catchable balls in one game than I did in the entirety of 2018 and I think that is a hugely important improvement.

Edit: addition aside, someone related. Do you know how many time Fitz completed 20 or more passes in his entire career? Three. The last of which was on November 19th 2016 vs. Arkansas.

I’ll chalk a lot of this up to first game jitters and suspensions affecting team chemistry. I will expect better next weekend at home.

I’ve been a State fan long enough to appreciate ANY win. We do have some stuff that needs cleaning up.

Let me be clear on something because there's a lot of stupidity on these boards where people make over-generalized judgments based on a specific comment or concern. My comment was in direct response to the "offense looked much better" comments. The facts don't necessarily align with that if you compare apples to apples. I can agree that Stevens looks to be a better passer and there are reasons to be optimistic about it. But there are also reasons to be concerned on both sides of the ball, not just defense, and some of the issues we are having on the offensive side of the ball predate Stevens and his improved corps of receivers.

Undisciplined yes, and also comatose to the point of letting a punt roll up against your heel. Don't we coach against that kind of 17n ****?

I think the comparison to Fitz is completely asinine. Except for one play, TS had great pocket awareness. He has the quickest release I have seen a State qb have in a very long time, and he’s decently accurate. It might be possible that you’ve forgotten what a pass first qb looks like since it’s been a while for us to have one. WR’s had way better hands today than they did all last season. Offense line looked sturdy(hopefully they can stay healthy). FUNdamentally, offense was fine. Offensive play calling was questionable at some points. However, defense showed tremendous lack of effort and coaching. LB’s were out of place with almost every motion which I’m sure other teams will notice on film. D-Line looked like wet turds just dropped on the deck. Defense has to and hopefully will play better, but it is the first game of season. Don’t abandon ship just yet shipmates.

We need to see him play against a better defense/team before we can make a true determination. The offense produced against cupcakes last year and was horrible against good defenses.

If we see Steven's and the offense prodice when things speed up against a good opponent, I'll feel good. Otherwise I think Jomo's time with us will be short.

It was a big win. We're gonna need every damn one we can get. Stevens--- well, if he beat out K.T., then K.T. is headed to a G5 team. TS looked like a slower version of Fitz. At least his overthrown passes have a prettier spin.

Our D-Line better grow up quick and what the hell is our 17n placekicker doing cheating on a intro to Chem class?

The suspensions are definitely going to cost us some games this year. Our LBs looked slow and it didn't look like anyone on our defense was interested in sticking their head in there and driving somebody in the turf.

Will be interested to see the improvement in week 2 against the dirty birds

But the first SEC game will make it clear as to whether we've got a shot at 6 wins or we pack it up after the Egg Bowl. I'm hopeful, but buckling in for what could be a rough year.

Do you really believe the stats you listed are “facts” and are truly an “apples to apples” comparison? Surely you don’t?

Two different years, two different teams . . . but I understand your point.

I don't think any reasonable person would hesitate to say that Tommy Stevens throws a MUCH more-catchable ball than does Nick Fitzgerald. Everybody saw that yesterday during our game.

Thus, in my opinion, our passing offense will be effective this season. I think we can go ahead and proclaim that. (Barring injuries, of course.)

This. I refuse to base my total season outlook on game one. We have a lot to improve on - maybe that improvement will happen, maybe it won't. Here's what I saw:
Kylin Hill ran well and stayed healthy. Nick Griffin did well as a second back.
Tommy Stevens was starting his first game since high school on the road and looked pretty good doing it.
Receivers played well, I thought.
Kicking game needs to improve. Whether that's Christmann coming back or Lawless working hard in practice.
Nice punts.
Defense needs to improve in all aspects. Secondary was good, but front 7 just needs to play better. Tackling, guys. Wrap 'em up.
If Leo Lewis ever pulls that stunt again, he needs to stand next to JoMo the rest of the game. That was embarrassing.

Like everyone else, I’d love to have seen us win 60-0, but, considering everything, we have to be happy with a W. A lot of SEC teams looked terrible yesterday. Some of them will improve every week and turn into good teams. Hopefully, we will be one of those teams. We made some good halftime adjustments and kept penalties and boneheaded plays to a minimum. We are in position to be a solid team. Now, we have film, and we get to see what the staff can do.
