Billy was my first choice when Cal left (of course along with Brad Stevens and Jay Wright lol). One thing to consider. If Todd Golden leaves, Billy’s name is on Florida’s court. Whether it be UNC, Kansas, or Florida there’s a good chance he’ll be back in the college game next year competing for national titles kicking our ***.
And speaking of Jay Wright, there was an article written that maybe UNC pursues him.

If Donovan goes to UNC, I hope every booster pulls money from the basketball program until Mitch is completely out the door, golden parachute is taken away, a good AD is hired, and Pope is asked to resign. This would be embarrassing if this happens.

Your automatically assuming that Billy is going to be a success, considering that he is many years removed from the college game. I would rather have someone who has already proven that they can navigate the present NIL and Portal days of college basketball.

Kind of my opinion. Of course he could still be a good college coach. Just don't expect the back to back championship version. He doesn't get me excited at all. I'd rather have a current coach like oats or any of the others talked on here
I’m with you on there is no guarantee. however Mitch got the current guy who has zero accolades and a horrible recruiter and over spends at NIL level. Donovan would 100% be an upgrade to what we got.

I don't want Golden anywhere near Chapel Hill after his behavior. Kind of feel the same way about Oats after the things his players have done.
Billy is 61, can't help but wonder how many more years he'd like to coach. The unc job is no different from Kentucky in demanding winning at a high level. Be interesting to see if he has an interest in that job.
HS recruiting is not the end all be all that it was back then. A lot of these NIL signings are GM to agent without even visiting. I bet he would rather do that a $8-10m that work a complete 5-6 yr rebuild for $6m on the bulls on a 82 game schedule.
Billy Donovan goes to UNC it would be a shame. He was a legendary college coach. Just because he hasn't won in the NBA doesn't make him trash. Pitino and Brad Stevens did as well. He's the total package as a college coach. Today, you give a coach the checkbook and let them go. He would kill it at UNC. I can't take anyone who sleeps on him seriously. That would suck for us UK fans who would love to see him here.

That’s a myth. The dude can coach, yes….theres NIL but a successful person realizes that’s out of their realm and hires a great GM.

Yeah, that’s not even close to accurate. He coached that elite 2014 Florida team. Beat us 3 times. We almost clipped them in SECT final. They made the FF, along with us, UConn and Wisconsin.
LMFAO Jay Wright is not gonna go coach UNC. Hell, he could just go back to Nova if he wanted to coach. UNC is quite arrogant even thinking Wright would coach them and their cheating *** program.
I am hoping UNC will not wait out Donovan and he departs Chicago at end of season. I will then hope Pope turns UK around next season and if he does not Donovan is available to Coach the Cats for a decade at least.
I agree. Donovan has been way from the college game for 11 years and hasn’t been that successful in the NBA. There will be lots of big name swirling around in the media as speculation for the UNC job. They’ll end up with Jerry Stackhouse or Kenny Smith.
Pitino failed in the NBA twice. Still had phenomenal success every time he took a college job.

Can’t disagree. Golden is not some can’t miss coach and/or some grand wizard of basketball coaching. Truth is, he had a generational talent at PG last season. They were damn near beat FOUR times in the tournament, if not for several miraculous performances by Clayton. Dude had a Kemba Walker’esque type NCAAT.
Golden should forward Clayton half his future earnings for the rest of his career. Literally the ONLY reason they won that title. Dude hit some unbelievable shots time and time again in the tournament. Just gave him the ball and he won all those games for them.
This past season, he had the luxury of having the biggest and best frontcourt in college basketball. They were allowed to push, shove, go over the back of every SEC team they played this year. That **** didn’t fly in the NCAAT and they were bounced second round. Incredible choke job with the roster he had. Let’s see how he does once that frontcourt is gone. I’m willing to bet not very good. Can’t wait to see it!
Golden wont be leaving Florida for UNC. An established SEC program won’t lose their basketball coach to North Carolina. That job does not hold the esteem it did even 5 years ago.
UNC hired Belichick, I expect a similiar dumb move for basketball. Kenny Smith or Stackhouse is the likely choice.
