Notes: Skyhawks are turning the ball over this season at the highest rate in memory. Monacan still managed to turn it over more often last night (6 to 5). Monacan had one pass go for 18 yards their other 5 completions went for a total of -2 yards. Likewise they had one rush go for 21 yards their other 28 rushes netted -49 yards. Even if you take out their 5 sacks the Chiefs would have only picked up -11 yards on 23 rushes. Monacan was 0-11 on 3rd down. Monacan's defense was very stout at first as Bird's firs 6 possessions only only got the Skyhawks 7 yards of offense. Bird then reeled off scoring drives of 47, 31, 36, 60, and 29 yards in 5 of the next 7 possessions as the game was pretty much played on Monacan's side of the field the rest of the night. Seemed to a typical Bird win against a good opponent in that they eventually seem to wear down the opponent. Monacan delivered some big hits on defense (usually, all the hits that make the crowd react seem to come from Bird, but not last night). Bird has now allowed 13 points on the season, but none given up by the first defense. Assuming we guarantee the Skyhawks a playoff game, Wright needs 810 yards in his next 5 games to become Bird's 6th straight 2000 yard rusher. He would be the 5th different back in 5 years to pull off the feat. (Yahkee Johnson did it in back to back in 2010-2011). Bird has clinched another winning season; the last time they failed to have a winning season was 1989 when they went 5-5 so this will be their 26th straight winning season. Bird only allowed 33 points in the regular season in 1979 (2nd year school was open). The Skyhawks are on pace right now to only allow 22. With two hapless offenses left on the schedule they have a real chance to break this record even in this era of high scoring football. Bird has reeled off 17 straight wins against Monacan and leads the all time series 29-4. The series was tied 3-3 in 1990 after Monacan's 3 straight wins so it's 26 - 1 since then. In 1998 Monacan destroyed Bird 51-14, but since then the Chiefs have only managed to stay within a score of the Skyhawks twice. The most painful loss for Monacan was like a 14-13 loss in 2003 which caused Monacan to finish 9-1 and miss the playoffs as an 8-2 Bird took the playoff position. It was loss that seemed to put the Chiefs' program in the doldrums for a decade. Bird's remaining opponents are a combined 5-16. Their tenth 10-0 regular season since 1987 (that would be 10 perfect seasons in 29 years) seems likely.
Bird currently has the longest active streak of making the playoffs (16) in the VHSL and advancing to the round of 16 (also 16). Running the first streak to 17 seems almost certain. However, they would still be 10 short of Central-Lunenburg's all time streak of 27. If Bird can win 4 more games they would have their 7th straight 10 win season. Only Oscar Smith has a longer current streak (11), but I think their streak is unofficial due to forfeits.
