I think having a D-1 and a 1-AA is a great idea

Eliminate the conference tourneys and let everyone in. Break it down into 4 sections and seed them in each. No more sending Syracuse to the West as a 1 seed- they have to win the Northeast. Have the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and West and get your Final Four.

I like it

I agree with you C34, Huggins is definitely on to something good. I think that his idea is a great one for college basketball.

I'm sure the conferences will be all for this idea. Nobody goes to those conference tournaments anyway - especially the big ones.

A division or two would be pretty talent heavy. The talent in the tournament would thin out after the regionals.

Oh hell, it works for baseball so why not.....because the NCAA is against change. Except for banning certain mascots.

that sounds too much like a common sense approach. We all know the NCAA is severly lacking in this category.

The seeding would be alot easier, but you still have to play the same amount of games.</p>

(1) For years I've been advocating the creation of a D1-AA tourney. I say replace the NIT with the new tourney.
(2) Don't let everyone into the revamped D1-A tourney.Cut the field to 32 teams.
(3) Only conferences that have produced a Final Fourteam within the last 10 yearswill be rewarded with an automatic bid.
(4) Only regular season champions receive automatic bids.
(5) Conferences could still stage the end-of-the-season tourneys, but they'd only serve to allowteams to improve their resume ... either for making the tourney or to improve their seeding. FWIW, that is the majority of what is happeningnow. Only a low percentage of teams actually work their way into the tourney by their performance ina conference tourney.
(6) Make the regionals "regional" again. Only send a team outside of its natural region only (a) when that region is over-respresented and (2) whena teamisseeded at or nearthe bottom of its regional. Example: 32 team NCAA tourney, 8 teams/region,11 teams from the South make the tourney, the lowest seeded 3 teams would be moved to other regionals. I don't care if theEast Regional ends up with UNC, Duke, Maryland, Georgetown, Syracuse, etc. Sooner or later, you must face the big boys. Besides, it a little easier for more fans to get tickets and travel to a regional than the Final Four.

32 auto bids by formula NOT committee (seeds 1-8)
64 team playoff to determine who plays 32 auto bids consisting of bubble teams that didn't make top 32 and teams that won their conference tournaments and weren't in top 32.
seeding:
auto 1 vs play in 8/9
auto 8 vs play in 1/16
etc.

with this you end up with basically two first rounds, meaning 4 full days of non stop games. 64 play in games, half one day and half the next and then two days later have the 32 play in winners play the 32 auto bids as the official 1st round followed by the normal course of things. it'd be awesome! what do you think?
