We did. He was a character. And controversial.

And as much as we didn’t like him. He was still someone’s grandfather and dad.

We arguably took part of his soul away. The 1975 loss still haunted him years after the fact. Sorta like Cal and 2015.

Father Time forgets no one. Those of us who grew up watching him coach at Indiana know that a legend is gone. Time is running short for all of us

In an effort to say something nice about him I’ll note that he had a 43 percent winning percentage against Kentucky which might be his most impressive coaching credential.

Also, while he competed against several Kentucky coaches he only sucker punched one in the back of the head before running away. I guess that’s better than he treated his own players.

Really, the positive attributes were even more than not cheating and graduating players.

Most people would be surprised at how generous and thoughtful he could be - because he was simultaneously (and more publicly) one of the world’s great a-holes.

And despite the rivalry, he had some great relationships with the likes of Cawood Ledford, Joe B. Hall, and especially CM Newton (who was one of his closest friends in coaching and an assistant on the ‘84 Olympic team).
