You’re right, they don’t. But you mention two guys who missed large chunks of the season, including Theiro who didn’t even play down the stretch when Arkansas was playing their best basketball, and their replacements via the portal aren’t slouches either in Ewin and Pringle (so far). Ivicic wasn’t even getting much PT at all by the end of the season.
Arkansas has had a top 5 recruiting class in three of the last four years. Muss actually signed more 5-stars than UK in the 2022 class, but he underachieved with them until getting hot in the tournament that year (similar to this past season actually).
Pelphrey of all people had a top 10 class at one point too even though he was an awful coach. Arkansas produces good basketball talent - basically the opposite of football lol.
Cal hasn’t had an injury free (talking about a major season wrecking injury to a key player) since 2012.
Just one injury can destroy your chances when you:
1. Rely heavily on elite talent to win you games.
2. You only have 7-8 guys that you want to play 30+ minutes every game.
One guy goes down for any significant amount of time and you are in trouble with Cal type rosters.
Even when Cal bothers to use most of his scholarships, the 10th, 11th, and 12th men are not good enough to make up for the loss of an elite player.
Every one deals with injuries, but it has seemed to really hit Cal hard over the years for some reason.
