Clemson fired football coach Tommy Bowden on Monday, four days after the Tigers lost to Wake Forest and fell to 3-3, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.

Bowden informed his assistant coaches of his firing this morning. Assistant head coach/wide receivers coach Dabo Swinney has been named the team's interim coach for the final six regular season games and potential bowl game.

The Tigers were ranked No. 9 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll and were favored to win their first ACC championship in Bowden's 10th season as coach. But Alabama blasted the Tigers 34-10 in the Aug. 30 opener in Atlanta's Georgia Dome, and Clemson then lost to Maryland 20-17 at home and again to Wake Forest 12-7 to drop their record to 1-2 in ACC play.

Bowden received a lucrative contract extension from Clemson after the 2007 season. He received the extension after considering a potential coaching postition at Arkansas.

Bowden, the son of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, has a 72-45 record and eight bowl appearances at Clemson.

received a contract extension after last season.

Just to make the point schools do fire coaches after giving them raises and extensions the year before. That is schools that actually care about winning in football.

He'd be better than Crxxm, but not much better. We can do a lot better than Tommy Bowden.

for a sumbitch with a 72-45 record with 8 bowls in 9 full years here at State.

We might do better, but I wouldn't be pissed to have him.

8 bowls in 9 years and a 72-45 record would be incredible. Not to mention we damn sure wouldn't have to worry about having a suck *** offense with Bowden on the sideline.

It's a hell of a lot easier to win at Clemson that it is to win at MSU. Since 1978, Clemson has had 5 head coaches. Only Tommy West had a lower winning percentage there than Bowden did. Even Ken Hatfield did better there than Tommy Boy has. Danny Ford won 76% of his games at Clemson. He won 46% of his games coaching in the SEC.

His teams always choke when they're expected to do well. He did go 12-0 at Tulane, but it was with someone else's players.

And also with Rich Rodriguez as his offensive coordinator.

If we beat Tennessee the coaching turmoil will be incredible. Tubby firing his OC. Clemson firing Bowden. If we beat UT Fatty Phil will be in need of a new job.

We just honored the '98 undefeated team a couple of weeks ago. I heard more mentions of Rich Rodriguez and his offense, as well as Buddy Teevens and the players that he brought in than talk of the job Bowden did.

He was very interested in the State job when we hired Croom.

He was under heat at Clemson that year too. Said he was sick of it and was waiting for the phone to ring.

Clemson went on that year to beat FSU and Tenn in the bowl, I think, and he got a new contract.

He said had State called when Sherrill left, he would have took it.

And yes, that came from him personally.

he would do that here.

I meant if State had a coach with a record like that they would build a statue of his ***.

Not big Clemson, they fire your *** for that.

See the difference in us and Clemson?

Even though they were modeled on us?

....and Petrino told me that if Ole Miss had just offered the job to him after Cutcliffe left, he would've taken it. He just didn't want to have to interview.

I agree completely. Bowden's record at Clemson is actually slightly better than Jackie Sherrill's record at MSU for his first 10 years (before the collapse) was. And I'd kill someone for a chance to have a decade like that again.

Look at the offensive stats for Clemson on the ESPN article's front page..............and the fact that the offense was one of the reasons he was fired.

Crap, we are bad.
