If Houston wins this week, they get a BCS bowl, the highest bowl tie in the SEC has. This is an 18 million dollar payout.
If Houston loses this week, they probably get a bid to the Hawii bowl, a bowl less prestigious than the BVBA compass bowl, and with less than half its payout (398K).
For comparison's sake, our likely destination, the Music City bowl, has a 1.6 million dollar payout (100K less than Liberty, 800K less than Gator, and about half of Peach - and a reasonable stepladder continues upward)
It's just crazy to think that Houston will go to either a bowl that's the same reward for the SEC champ, or a bowl that's significantly worse than our worst bowl, by the outcome of one game. (Similar situation to BSU dropping to the Las Vegas bowl from a BCS bowl last year from 1 game - cost every team in your conference about a million and a half dollars.)
I'm not saying if it's fair or not, it's just strange to me.
