If we win one against Iowa or Maryland and finish up with seven Ws, can we project what that does bowl-wise?

The later the better regardless of the opponent. Lots more bowl prep and extra practice.

The earliest projected game is only 3 days before Detroit on the 26th against a MAC opponent. I'd sacrifice the 3 days.

If we win one against Iowa or Maryland and finish up with seven Ws, can we project what that does bowl-wise?

The bowl picking order after the playoffs and "New Year's Six" are:

Citrus (likely to take the West champ IMO unless their record is really really bad)
Music City
Vegas
Pinstripe
Guaranteed Rate (Phoenix)
Quick Lane

From the Big Ten website:
2023 is the fourth year of the Big Ten’s current six-year non-CFP bowl cycle

• SELECTION PARAMETERS
“Variety Clauses” ensure fresh experiences and bowl destinations for students and fans, and specify the following:
§ Five different teams must appear in six games in the Citrus, ReliaQuest, Music City, and Guaranteed Rate Bowls
§ Two different teams must appear in three games in the Las Vegas Bowl
§ At least three different teams in four years from 2022 – 2025 in the Pinstripe Bowl, with the goal of four different teams

o “No Repeat” clauses for Big Ten non-CFP bowl games prohibit consecutive appearances in the same non-CFP bowl game in consecutive seasons

CITRUS - cannot be Purdue this season (I don't think that's going to be an issue.) Recently had Northwestern and Iowa too, so this might not be a good fit for Iowa either if the bowl has a reasonable choice.
MUSIC CITY - cannot be Iowa. Also had Purdue the previous season.
VEGAS - cannot be Wisconsin
PINSTRIPE - cannot be Minnesota. Had Maryland the previous year although that's not in the current contract's four year window.
GUARANTEED RATE - cannot be Wisconsin. Minnesota was here the previous year so they are unlikely, too.
QUICK LANE - no restrictions this season

Official Big Ten bowl overview

If Wisconsin wins enough to earn the Citrus over Iowa, the Hawkeyes are blocked from Music City and fall to Vegas consideration at best.

Selfishly want Citrus Bowl because it's on the 26th, and we are not far away that week- we can drive there!

So, as I understand, if Iowa wins the West, Wisconsin cannot take it from Rutgers or another B1G East team? In other words, would Citrus skip to #2 in West over an East team or nobody knows?

Rough Guess:
Wisconsin games left: Ohio State (L), Indiana (W?), Northwestern (W?), Nebraska (W?), Minnesota (??) 6-2, with a tossup.

Iowa games left: NW (W), Rutgers (?), Illinois (L?), Nebraska (W?) 5-3 with a tossup.

If Iowa and Wisconsin end up with same record, Iowa wins West because of head to head. Hope for Iowa, and hope we beat them and they win out???

Detroit Bowl ..been there. Pinstripe..been there
Ford Football Field 1000 times better than Yankee Stadium

I don't question Ford Field. But I do question whether it's worth the travel difference and, for anyone coming from out of town, and the lack of other things to do.

Except for the convenience of travel for local fans, there is nothing attractive about Yankee Stadium for a bowl. It sucks for watching football, and it’s probably the worst place ever for tailgating. Grills and alcohol are “prohibited”, and in both bowls there, our group was shaken down by the parking attendants to look the other way. That said, I would absolutely rather be there than no Bowl at all.

The bar atmosphere at Yankee stadium is a lot of fun for a bowl event. Basically a huge organized party for RU fans.

If Vegas is a realistic shot, I love that one for us.

Yes because it’s an awesome fun tourist destination. But also there’s a good chance we get a national brand team there. And that would do wonders for eye balls and perception for RU.

From the common fan thinking about how RU is doing consider the post season options of

RU vs NC St / BC / Wake in Yankee stadium
RU vs USC / Utah in Vegas

Massively different street cred and exposure in those scenarios just for the matchup alone. Gotta win one more game at least for Vegas to be remotely possible.

Nothing like paying $20 for a beer with NYC prices. I'll bring my flask with me and sip bourbon in the lots.

Beers are not $20 at those bars. Come on now. Inside the stadium yes. But a Rutgers Alumni Association party at Billlys willl be a really really good time. Mascot, cheerleaders , band, RU swag giveaways, the fight song. The atmosphere would be electric.

I've done the PS bowl twice. I would not call anything about it electric.

Like everyone else on this thread, I've been thinking about this a lot the last few days. A concern I have is whether or not Nebraska gets bowl eligible. They have 4 wins now and should be favored in 2 of their remaining 5 games. You know how their fans travel. If they can get 6 wins, do they shoot up the ladder? That could eliminate any shot at Vegas even if we had 7-8 wins.

I'm concerned that any shot at Vegas is predicated on Nebraska (and possibly Illinois) not getting 6 wins.

Agreed with respect to Nebraska. However, I don't think Illinois travels well.

They travel bad along with Minnesota, Maryland, etc
We will bring more fans to a Southern or Western bowl.

95% chance it's Pinstripe. None of these other scenarios are even remotely realistic unless RU somehow wins 2 more games. Even then it would still more than likely be Pinstripe. This is about as close to a slam dunk as you can get.

P.S. To answer your question @LeapinLou I have no affiliation with the bowl or "inside" knowledge. It's just common sense. If Rutgers is available when they pick, which we almost certainly will be, the Pinstripe will choose us and be thrilled to do so. Even with our poor home attendance the last few years, they know we have enough of a hardcore fanbase to fill a good portion of Yankee Stadium and make their bowl look and sound great on TV.

What is your affiliation to the bowl, if any? Just curious if your opinion is based on some knowledge that Pinstripe will definitely take RU if they are available when it's their turn to pick.

The Pinstripe is going to want us, it's simply good business and common sense with our location proximity. A better record may not even change our chances at getting a warmer climate bowl.

For a number of different reasons, we should be rooting against Nebraska becoming bowl eligible. They would jump us even if our record was better.

Uhhh... not even remotely realistic? I dissent. Music City is realistic if we beat the Terps. They are 5-2 and still face Michigan and Penn State. If we beat them, they could be 7-5 at best (also have to go to Northwestern and Nebraska, could even be 6-6 or lose out??). We would be 7-5 at worst. What's the case for them ahead of us in that scenario that makes it "unrealistic"? Their QB is possibly a draw. That's about it.

So forgive me for not clicking your link and buying Pinstripe tickets today. We might not be there.

The Michigan saga is getting worse and worse (big Washington Post story this evening with new information).

We are getting closer to where it is feasible that Michigan is made ineligible for the conference championship and postseason bowls, which would move RU up in the bowl selection and allow them to escape the Pinstripe with a win or two.

The Pinstripe Bowl is absolutely awful. Have been twice and will never go again. It is expensive, a pain to get to and horrible sightlines. Would be happy for the team regardless, but overall the Pinstripe Bowl is a terrible experience for locals.

It’s the farthest thing from what a Bowl experience was meant to be. In the end it’s better than no Bowl and that’s the only positive. I think there was a clause that a team only has to play there once every 7 years…. Interestingly that was a part of the agreement.. tells it all.

Of all the trashing of the Pinstripe bowl...that's the one Bowl I'd actually be able to attend. I'm all for it. Also, I love that it will play up the fact that we are NYC's team. For the locals, going to Yankee stadium isn't exciting. But as a tourist destination for fans from around the country, NYC is nothing to sneeze at.

Who knows how accurate these numbers are, based on attendance being ticket sales vs. butts in seats? But here are the Pinstripe attendance numbers according to the wikipedia entry on the game:

2022 Minnesota-Syracuse 31131
2021 Maryland-VT 29653
2020 COVID-19
2019 Michigan State-Wake Forest 36895
2018 Wisconsin-Miami 37821
2017 Iowa-Boston College 37667
2016 Northwestern-#22 Pitt 37918
2015 Duke-Indiana 37218
2014 Penn State-Boston College 49012
2013 #25 Notre Dame-Rutgers 47122
2012 Syracuse-West Virginia 39098
2011 Rutgers-Iowa State 38328
2010 Syracuse-Kansas State 38274

The two big bumps are when Notre Dame and Penn State were in the game. The cruddy attendance was Minnesota-Syracuse last year and Maryland-VT the year before. All other years are within 2103 tickets, which is just in the noise level.

Nice to see the B1G has won the last six games against the ACC, and seven of eight with the only loss being in overtime.

B1G teams that have not been to the Pinstripe: Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue, Illinois. We haven't gone as a member of the B1G.
