if we're not going to get a playoff, the bowl system needs to be reformed. There's too damn many of them. I mean, who the hell wants to watch Louisiana Tech and Northern Illinois or Buffalo and Connecticut play?
Here's my list of reforms that will never happen.
1. Get rid of all but 12 bowls + national championship game.
2. Go back to the classic names, no more Chick-fil-A bowl, it's the Peach Bowl damnit. It can be the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
3. Have three tiers of bowls after the national title game.
Tier 1 Games: BCS Games (Sugar, Rose, Fiesta, Orange)
Tier 2 Games: Cotton, Citrus, Holiday, Gator
Tier 3 Games: Hall of Fame, Peach, Sun, Alamo
4. Only Tier 1 Games are allowed to have conference tie-ins (Big Ten and Pac 10 champs to Rose, Big 12 to Fiesta, SEC to Sugar, ACC to Orange)
5. Requirements to go to a bowl:
1. A winning record (7 wins, 6-6 is a .500 record) OR
2. A Top 25 ranking in either poll OR
3. A Top 25 BCS ranking
Tier 1 bowls would require a Top 12 ranking in the BCS or a conference championship in traditional affiliations. If a conference had enough top notch teams to get three teams in Tier 1 bowls, let them.
Under these requirements, here would be your bowl lineup:
National Title Game: Florida vs. Oklahoma
Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. Texas (with the roatating first pick of the rotation, the Sugar goes with a great matchup)
Rose Bowl: USC vs. Penn State (traditional matchup)
Fiesta Bowl: Texas Tech vs. Utah (geographical matchup)
Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Ohio State (Orange chooses Ohio State over Boise, TCU and Cincy)
Cotton Bowl: TCU vs. Oklahoma State (Cotton selects an old classic SWC/Big Eight battle)
Citrus Bowl: Boise State vs. Georgia (Citrus brings an SEC power against the high flying northwest team)
Holiday Bowl: BYU vs. Oregon (geographical matchup)
Gator Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Cincinatti
Hall of Fame Bowl: Michigan State vs. Pittsburgh
Peach Bowl: Missouri vs. Ole Miss
Sun Bowl: Oregon State vs. Northwestern
Alamo Bowl: Boston College vs. LSU
Troy, Buffalo, etc. ends their season knowing that they were their conference champion. If they would have done a little more, they could have been selected.
