Since we don't have a separate board for bball I am going to create some threads for hoops. Season starts next week for many, and teams have been scrimmaging already.

Most of my focus is on WNC teams but feel free to post about other areas here too.

Decent win for McDowell over a decent East Rutherford team. Final was 64-45

 

[The Patriot]

Freedom played fairly well for a bunch of guys who were playing football Friday. They beat Patton 90-59 with a pair of dunks. King Johnson was probably the leading scorer for the Patriots, but I think at least 8 players had solid performances.

They play RS Central and Mallard Creek at home on Tuesday and Wednesday Night then visit North Buncombe Friday night. If the Titans can win all 3 it will be a great sign for this years team.

Freedom 60, East Burke 52. Sloppy performance by the Patriots. Kobe and King Johnson each had a dunk, but those were the main highlights. I think Freedom is a lot better than the Cavs, but they really didn’t show it tonight. At TCR tomorrow.

In 5A we need to have a serious conversation about adding NE Guilford to the list of contenders especially if they go East. I like Hunt and E. Alamance as well. 5A east is wide open

McDowell with a big comeback win over Mallard Creek in their first true test. They were down 15-2 early but came back to win in OT 65-57.

Patriots fall 49-46 at TC Roberson. The boys had a free throw that would have tied the game at 47 with less than five seconds left but missed and had to foul. TCR then made two to cinch it. It was close throughout and Freedom had chances to pull it out. Kaden Davis had not been playing due to an ankle sprain suffered in the football finale and he would play point guard allowing King Johnson to move back to shooting guard, his more natural position. That could help on both ends of the court as Davis is a good ball handler and defender. It would also give Freedom more depth.

McDowell is 7-3 and hit a rough patch dropping games @ North Buncombe, @ East Rutherford and @ Erwin but has rebounded with wins over North Buncombe at home and Asheville.

South Caldwell is 7-2 but has played an easy schedule losing to Bandys and Southlake Christian.

Watauga is 4-0 but has struggled against 2A and 3A teams only beating Mountain Heritage by 2 and Avery by 10

Freedom is 5-2 but has struggled against quality competition.

St Stephens is 7-2 but has played a weak schedule and lost bad to Hickory

Alexander Central is 4-3

It seems to be anyones guess as to who wins the league. Talent is down overall.
