Seen short interview. He said the SS is really important to wrestletown. Reason for not sending entire squad like in past was Wisconsin in 5 days and something internal. The something internal he said was none of your business to interviewer. Did talk of fixing timing and wanting to get a full squad back into it in the future. Did not really give me comfort in travel and ticket expense with future SS right now.

Something internal? Injuries, maybe?
Was wondering the same LW but no mention of injuries, just internal affairs. Maybe half the squad is dinged up some with our tough early schedule and he didn't want to just hold out those specific guys because that would bring out a whole set of speculation and worry. So maybe just held them all out.

Could be, the national duals was awesome but it was a brutal test very early in the season for our guys and it definitely had some of our guys banged up.

Here's the full interview:

I also delved more into the entire situation at the end of my recap story from the weekend:

Jordan Williams' title highlights Iowa's 2026 Soldier Salute showing - On3

I'm not going to tell folks to start buying their tickets/hotels for next year but based on everything I've heard both publicly (from Brands) and privately I'm expecting the Hawks to send all of their big guns moving forward - just as they had at the three previous editions to this year.

And in the event that suddenly wasn't going to be the case, I don't believe there'd be a tournament at all - so folks probably wouldn't have to worry about getting 'stuck' with another meager group of Iowa entries like this year.

Good news. Thanks Tanner.

Said both Petersen and Bailey need individual work to get better. Im holding out hope for Nasir. Unless an injury is holding him back, I would think coach was talking conditioning work with Bailey. And Petersen has to finish fast, gets in lightning quick on the leg and then stops, maybe it is a strength thing with him but it looks much the same as last year with him.

Just spit balling. Maybe a friendly convo with Mauger. There a bit thin with Figs at 133.
He left OSU and was supposed to be going back to coach NLWC

I wondered if it was to have a friendly convo with Merrill

Tanner, this is off subject, but I cannot get into these free forums using my laptop now, when I could before. Pops up the pay sight to join when I click on a post?

Both need to watch old YouTube videos of Terry and Tom. It isn't easy to replicate that level of intensity and motion and power, but that is a key thing that's holding both of them back. Bailey is only wrestling 45 seconds of every match and still somehow exhausting himself. Peterson has heart but just isn't explosive or powerful enough; he needs to eat some nails and drink some Brands blood.

I 100% agree but for some reason TnT cant get through or teach what they magically had in their time on the mat. The teams all lack scrambling & turning abilities and beside that on their feet they cant even teach them this?

Is it really all just hand fighting & high crotches? Is this team on pace for the least amount of pins and near fall points? I honestly dont know but sure feels like it.

In the era of 3 point takedowns- the product is stand around. FFS

Yep. Completely forgot in his ping pong that he is back with NLWC and they don't need any lightweights. Maybe trying to find favor with other coaches because maybe NLWC don't even want him whenever he gets off suspension.

His schtick is beyond old. It use to be fun for awhile but years ago it morphed into they turn more away than they attract. Top recruits dont even put us on lists because of it. Iowa with its fan support & history should be on most top kids lists.
You may want to take a look at who is scheduled to come into the program in the next couple of years before you make an all or nothing type of comment.

I know who is all coming in. Its solid. But the future national champion rockstar types are mostly escaping Iowa at this time. Angelo was a huge get and I think he can win it all but hes really it. Iowa isnt putting together multiple rockstars in a class. Maybe on every other year we get a top 5 guy with some nice other top 30 guys. If you are impressed and feel that incoming core can hang on to a team 3rd or 4th. Have at it. I expect more. Nobody is catching PSU but we are sinking further away from even somewhat looking them in the eye anymore.

We might not catch PSU but Okie State can in the next two years. Between his recruits and what he can pull from the portal I think DT will be right there for the 28 NCAAs. Wish we had his draft choices…

That is outside my area of expertise, but I'm looking into it.

If you're still having the problem, reply here or message me directly (if you can).

And for other folks in the forum - feel free to chime in as well if you know of a solution!

This sure feels like do as I say, not as I do.

I quite frankly am tired of injuries, flu bugs and "external issues" that are none of our business.

So is Nasir injured? Or is his wrist still recovering from his surgery in the summer? Or does he need another surgery?

Man, he has fallen off BADLY. I wonder if it has to do with anything with health and if he can use a medical redshirt. He would have to stop competing this year to probably even apply for one.

This is exactly why Bassett was the perfect wrestler to thrive under TnT. If Bailey had Peterson’s heart and drive he could make it to the finals. He either has a medical condition he doesn’t know about, or a case of depression and HEW. Just seems like he wants to get off the mat instead of battle his opponent. Maybe he should redshirt the rest of the season, just be a spectator and decide in the off season if he still wants to be a wrestler. Also see a specialist at the u of I to get that hand taken care of.

It was said here prior to the tournament expect backups. I commented months ago about it and thought maybe we would see guys at Midlands instead of the Salute because of the timing and how moving the Salute back a week messes with the training phase prior to big 10 dual season. Bob commented about it last week as well. And Tom eluded to it on the press conference about how it was moved

That can all be true - and as always, it's Iowa's responsibility/prerogative to do what is best for its team in any given moment/scenario.

However, I can also tell you with direct knowledge that tournament organizers were completely blindsided by Iowa's meager entry list - and received little-to-no advanced warning of the development.

Iowa publicly announced the dates for its Big Ten dual schedule back on September 29th.

This is me editorializing now...but wasn't there plenty of time between then and last week to alert tournament organizers, other teams, and fans that they shouldn't expect the robust Hawkeye turnout that we'd seen each of the three previous years at this event?
