When the Braves announce their National League Division Series roster on Wednesday, there is a distinct possibility Dan Uggla will not be included.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez met with some players regarding roster decisions after the team held a workout that was closed to media members on Tuesday at Turner Field. An industry source said Uggla was informed that he will not be part of the 25-man roster the Braves will use during their best-of-five NLDS matchup against the Dodgers.

Before making anything official on Wednesday, the Braves will first evaluate the health of some of the players, including right-handed reliever Jordan Walden, who has been ineffective in three of the four appearances he has made since missing three weeks with a strained groin.

If Uggla is indeed left off the roster, the Braves could go with a 12-man pitching staff, which could provide some insurance in the event that Walden’s struggles continue.

Uggla has batted .179 with 22 home runs and a .671 OPS in 136 games this season. The veteran second baseman has hit .133 with one home run and a .508 OPS in the 77 plate appearances he has compiled while playing 24 games since undergoing LASIK surgery to repair his vision in August.

As the regular season’s final weeks unfolded, it became apparent that Elliot Johnson would serve as Atlanta’s starting second baseman when the postseason began. But there was some thought there might still be a bench spot for Uggla, who drew the club’s highest salary ($13 million) this year.

As a fan that has watched a good portion of this seasons games I would like to see him on the roster. I understand what would lend the the club to leave him off but I think he can offer some benefits to the club. He has a lot of intangibles that I like. But he is a Guy capable of the three run bomb, plays solid D, has a good on base, and is a highly ablove average base runner. I would like his bat available late in games in a match up situation.

Completely agree. Leaving off a vet like Uggla (even though he hasn't been as solid at the plate) could either be really good or really bad (with being really bad being more likely, IMO). Not a smart gamble to take. Fredi better understand how his absence would impact the team chemistry before deciding to leave him off the roster.

Most every time he come to the plate, especially with runners on, it is an automatic K. Just count on it.

Saying he hasn't been solid at the plate is like saying the sky is blue. About the only thing he has done at the plate is pad the strikeout stats of the pitcher since he is usually good for about 2-3 a game. The other players on the team have to know this is the case and I think they want their best chance to win the world series. I'd find a way to keep BJ Upton off the roster too. The two of them at the plate look like 4 year olds trying to hit a pinata at a birthday party.

Yea but the bigger gamble to me is how the teams chemistry will be affected. Uggla is a respected vet and I bet has some leadership on the club. If Fredi feels it might have a positive impact, then leave him off. It could very well have a much bigger negative impact across the whole team, though. To me, this is a decision that centers around how well fredi knows his team and what will help/hurt them more and not just Ks at the plate.

I think bj has some value as a pinch runner, defensive replacement for gattis late in games. Uggla can't run and Elliot's defense is better than ugglas.

I have a friend (Stuart Spires) who was signed with the Braves back on June 18, 1990 and his signing was announced on television soon after.

Stuart Spires was a professional baseball player in the Atlanta Braves minor league system. Spires signed with the Braves as an amateur free agent on June 18, 1990 by scout Roy Clark and was assigned to the GCL Braves in Bradenton, Florida.

The Braves did not play on 6/18, but played the Cincinnati Reds 6/19 – 6/21.

I realize this is probably a needle in a haystack, but this means a great deal to him and I would greatly appreciate any assistance you have to offer. I was hoping to figure out how to get this for him for Christmas. I have already tried the Braves, MLB Turner Sports with no luck. Thanks so much for your time and consideration.
