It's been a long few days/weeks/months/years/decades for the Kentucky football program. UK football fans have been Charlie Brown for about 62 years now, and the rest of the college football world has been Lucy. When you think about it, how much of a miracle is it that UK football has the fans that they have? This week, many of those fans will stay at the house. Commonwealth Stadium will have more fans this week than the Vandy game in 2012, but that's not saying much. And who can blame them? UK football is currently a dysfunctional, disorganized mess (both on the field and off). I have a feeling this is one of those seasons that, once it ends, we'll hear some mind numbing crap about what was going on with the staff and within the locker room. That's down the road though. This week, UK gets Charlotte. It should be an easy win. Charlotte has been getting hammered pretty much weekly. BUT, who knows. UK has enough talent to play with most teams, but they cut their own throats enough to lose to almost anybody. Which Kentucky will show up? Probably a little of both.

Records: Kentucky 4-6 (2-6), Charlotte 2-8 (0-7)

Kentucky offense vs. Charlotte defense: Advantage Kentucky
The only storyline that will interest most people this week is Drew Barker getting his first college start. Barker came in last week against Vandy and had mixed results. Whenever you think about this offense though, the first thought has to be the OL and how they'll matchup against the other teams front seven. Clearly, the 49ers defensive front is mostly putrid, but they're apparently pretty active. That shouldn't really matter this week, but you never know. UK's OL played a pretty solid game in Nashville (IMO, their best performance of the season), so as long as they took time to prepare this week (and that can be a challenge when the environment is toxic, and you have to wonder about that locker room right now), they should play well. Mostly, I hope this week starts a kind of heeling process for this team. Barker offers the team a fresh start. The opponent is putrid. Kentucky still has plenty of skill talent, though I wonder how hard Baker is playing at this point (thought he kind of quit on some blocks last weekend). So what to expect? If it was Towles, I'd expect more of the same. I think Barker will equal a breath of fresh air. Combine that with a God-awful opponent, and I think this offense will have a very productive day. Then again, I've thought that all season long.

Kentucky defense vs. Charlotte offense: Advantage Kentucky
Lost in last weeks debacle in Nashville was a solid performance by the UK defense. Granted, they were playing on offense that would probably punt more often than not in a game against Trinity, but give them their due. Take away that trick play, and UK would have allowed around 250 yards and no significant drives. This week, they get a Charlotte offense that is probably on par with Vandy's. The 49ers play a couple of QB's. The one that stands out is backup Matt Johnson. The junior is a dual threat that played quite a bit in last weeks loss to Texas-San Antonio (including the overtime). Johnson is a mediocre/poor passer and average runner, but we all know what UK's defense can make average players look like. RB Kalif Phillips is closing in on 1000 yards, but he injured a knee last week and didn't return. He's expected to play against UK. Overall, the 49ers are run heavy offensively. Charlotte's workhorse WR is JR Austin Duke. Duke has nearly double the number of receptions (47) as the next receiver (25). Overall, expect a lot of run and quick passes (and probably punts). This is a matchup that Kentucky should win with ease.

Special Teams: Advantage Charlotte
I know NOTHING about the 49ers special teams, but I know they can't be any worse than Kentucky's. Seriously, I don't know that a special teams unit could be worse than what we have in Lexington. In less than two years, Kentucky has allowed SIX returns for touchdown. I'm betting there are programs that haven't allowed six this century (UK hasn't had one in five years). The returns are just part of the problem. UK has had penalties BEFORE field goals and punts. UK gets a flag on virtually every PR. Landon Foster has been awful this season. At least we have MacGinnis!

Charlotte will win if...hell freezes over. Yeah, I'm that confident Probably shouldn't be, but I am.

Kentucky will win if...they show up and spend at least half of the day not killing themselves.

Most important thing for Kentucky...get Drew Barker as many snaps as they can.

Prediction...Kentucky 45 Charlotte 13...Last week, I picked UK to score 17. A minor miracle considering some of my other picks. This week, UK should score more than 45, but we all know they'll cost themselves at least 21 points with mental errors. With that being said, I think the presence of Barker will give UK some renewed energy. Charlotte scores on a kick return and two field goals after UK turnovers (LOLOL).

As bad as this season has been Erik, you are still 7-3 right now.

If UK loses this game, I think the depths of despair will be worse than it was at Joker's lowest point. No way they lose. UK wins by 27.

I think we could score that much on them.
52-21 UK
Offense will revitalized with Barker under center and the recievers will have more glue and less butter on their gloves this week.

I think a pick 6 or a couple of short field positions will lead toCharlotte points.

You mean we play San Francisco this week? are you kiddin me? How'd they get on our schedule?

Seriously I just hope we clean up the mistakes and look like an organized sideline and a coaching staff that knows what they are doing this week. This will be a good test to see how well Coach Stoops can handle and correct breakdowns such as we saw last week.

This will also be the Drew Barker development game. How he performans may ultimately give us a sneak preview into next year. Maybe some other younger players get some PT also.

Need to show up play well and beat the spread - gather moment for next weeks bowl game qualifier with the Ville.

Eric, I get so much enjoyment reading the tone of your breakdowns week to week. This last couple of years has been filled with so much optimism early on (rightfully so) and it just fades little by little until toward the end of the year your last few breakdowns just become comical to read. Not razzing you at all, seriously find it funny, sad but funny which sums up UK football in general.

UKErik; I always look forward to your game breakdowns and I greatly appreciate your efforts. Cats2010 said it best. I hope you are right and we see some improvements in Foster's punting and special teams play. We are going to need them against the tards. Go Cats!

It's easy to think no way we could lose this one, but then I just have to think back to the ULL and EKU games to know UK football can find a way to lose any game. Like the commercial says, it's what we do. I think they'll find a way to win this one though like they did those two.

I was so disgusted after last week's game I thought I'd just stop paying attention, but I can't. I guess it's sort of like people slowing down to see an accident. Can they play any worse? Sadly, maybe. I to will not be surprised as time goes by to hear more about some kind of rift in the team this year. Jus another Fall in the life of UK football fans, and your right it is amazing how many fans this program still has.

I guarantee if we have a 1st and goal anywhere inside the 3 that we will see all runs!

My actual biggest concern is that UK plays strictly ball control and hands the ball off 75% of the time. No doubt it probably means UK wins, but it doesn't help Barker for next week. We need Dawson to use the whole playbook with Barker to see what he can do reading defenses, moving in/out of the pocket, going through progressions, etc.

I'd like for UK to have a laugher, actually need one to boost confidence. Unfortunately, UK makes far too many mistakes to rout anybody and the mistakes seem to be getting worse and more frequent with each passing game. UK is after all probably the only school in college football who could turn what should've been like a 35-7 win into a loss which is what they did vs Vandy.

As for Barker, just manage the game. I think he's probably INT prone which is why he's played little. UK wins this game but it's much closer and uncomfortable than people want. UK will make enough mistakes to keep UNCC in it. UK 24-17.

I believe we'll see a completely different team out there this week. Losing to Vandy probably means UK has hit rock bottom. Not that they lost, but how they lost in a game they should have easily won. Hopefully a lot of soul searching happened over this past week. I too think there has been some things that have gone on with this team and staff that will explain a lot of things. We'll probably start to see it when coaches and players put in those transfer papers in the offseason. I'd be completely shocked if we didn't see 5-10 guys transfer/quit or retire.

The ascent of Barker to QB is hopefully the elixir that reinvigorates this team. Defense and Oline played one of their best games of the year, now it's time to see the QB position to begin their climb out of the abyss. I'm rooting for the kid, hope he is exactly what this program needs and finds a way to build enough confidence to give our guys a chance at redemption next week and get that illusive bowl slot.
