I hate to see Tony retire, but at least he's going out a winner.

I wonder if this will have any effect on Pujols?

Pujols is very fond of LaRussa... and I feel very confident that he will not sign until we name the replacement.

Hopefully it'll be someone Pujols supports and he'll come back.

I think Team Pujols will wait until Feilder sets the market.

If he re-signs with the Cardinals, they could be hamstrung with a 9-10 year deal worth $250MM+ for a guy who may or may not be 31 years old.

If he goes somewhere else - especially another national league club - they could be faced with backlash from the fanbase and the risk of having to face him until he eventually can't produce. And whoknows how long that might be. His numbers - while still very good - were down this year. You could say he simply had a below par year(which happens toall big leaguers) or you could make a case that his skills might be dimishing a bit. Impossible to know the real answer to thatone until this time next year.

The Cardinalshave indicatedthey plan to keep their2012 payrool in the$110MM range. If you are paying two guys(Holiday and Pujols) around 40% of that, itcould put you in a difficult spot when it comestime to cut long termdeals with young stars like Freese and Craig.Tying up a good chunk of yourpayroll for a few high dollar veterens is the Cub model - which clearly doesn't work.

I could see the Cardinals shopping Holliday if they do re-sign Pujols. If they don't, I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up in one of three places - Florida, Texas or Anaheim.

The Cardinals are going to be competitive next year whether he stays or goes. The thing that concerns me the most are the long term ramifications if he stays.

I agree. If Pujols wants to be the top paid player, he will not be back in St Louis. If he wants to stay in St Louis he'll still get a great deal, but it will be a lower cost for the franchise.

The Angels, Rangers, and Red Sox are the teams I'm concerned about. I just don't see Florida schilling out that much money considering all the talent they've let walk through the years. Also, even though the Yankees are solid at first, I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a run at Pujols. After all, they are the Yankees.
