As Mutt says, a lot of times comedic people draw their talent from their own demons.

One of a kind talent and intelligence.

Amazing. Someone so funny having depression issues. You just never know what's going on upstairs with a person.

Sadly, a very common story

My gut tells me Robin Williams was an alcoholic/addict for whom recovery from the physical, mental, and spiritual disease was elusive, particularly the spiritual malady. We see this same story over and over again in the recovery community. I understand he suffered from depression; many of us do, including myself.

People that don't know alcoholism/addiction don't realize that often it's our drink/drug that keeps us from killing ourselves while at the same time it's the drink and drug that's killing us. And when you remove the drink/drug and recovery escapes you, suicide becomes a way to end the pain and misery. That is why suicide is so common in the recovery community: it works.

This is a sad, sad story; but what is most sad about it is that it is very, very common.

RIP Mork, we loved you and we'll see you on the other side.

And good luck to you in your struggle.

To add some needed humor, his golf bit was one of the best: "You mean like pool? 17 off pool! Not with a straight stick, with a little 17ed up stick!"

Maybe some good can come from this and we'll all start taking finding a cure for depression, bipolar and manic diseases more of a priority. These are living hells that afflict millions of people every year.

"O Captain! My Captain!"

I won't hijack the entire thread dedicated to Robin Williams to expound upon how much that post resonates with me. I'll simply thank you for it.

That said, Williams will always be these two roles to me:

</object>Long post, I know. My apologies to the SPS community, but I no longer participate in the book of faces. So, this is one of my few outlets.

I shall honor Robin Williams (and by proxy "Uncle" Walt Whitman) this night by "sounding my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world."

Thank you for sharing. Mental health is an often too ignored issue, and it is tragic when it takes anyone. Williams was a true gem, flawless in both comedy and drama. We won't see another like him.

This sucks. Now my two favorite comedians of all times are gone. The other was Mitch Heidberg. Dang they were great with totally different styles.

We already have one type of cure available to us every day: compassion. The vast majority of those who suffer from these illnesses feel alone, like no one cares about them, not even their family. And when they hear the stigma that is associated with said illnesses, it only makes them feel more isolated. People need to show more appreciation for everyone that surrounds them because those with the brightest smiles and heartiest of laughs can also be the ones hurting the most inside. Not trying to draw attention to my own situation, but I went through a period where I attempted to take my own life twice for the very reasons I listed above; I lived through that hell for what felt like an eternity, but it also gave me a very unique insight on the issue. People need other people, plain and simple. Sufferers are some damn good actors, and you may never know they're suffering; but if you show everyone that you genuinely care about them and that you appreciate having them in your life, it can go such a long way to helping someone who is suffering recover.

Dudehead, from one sufferer to another, I wish you the very very best in your recovery. I know you can make it through, and there are plenty of people, myself included, rooting for you.

As a Hedberg fan I have to ask, have you heard Hannibal Burress? He's a black Hedberg, and he is awesome.

Interesting, never knew that either. For all the negative things about our

state there are certainly a lot of positive things to talk about that rarely ever do get talked about.

I would assume her brother was Anse McClaurin the lawyer from Brandon. I played ball in high school against Anse III and knew him but not very well. He played at Brandon Academy and I think he tried to play at Ole Miss but can't remember if he was successful. If I remember correctly Anse III lost an eye and still battled through it to play ball. I think he is an attorney now in Brandon.

He was a recovering alcoholic/addict and I believe he recently had a slip and went back to rehab.

And you're right, if one does not find what one was looking for in the drink or drugs, the only relief is to go back to the drink or drugs. And the ultimate end is an early death. Most commonly by overdose, accident, health issues brought about by the addiction or suicide.

God bless, dudehead.

Live on Broadway is one of the best stand up sets of all time. Absolutely epic.

My favorite anecdote about Robin: in the Director's Commentary of the Live on Broadway DVD, the director talks about only meeting Robin an hour before the show. He asks him "So, you have your set ready to go?" and Robin pulls out a 3x5 notecard with a few scribbles on it and says "I have some ideas." The director was so panicked he almost canceled the show. But Robin goes out there and basically ad libs 90 minutes of the most hysterical stand up you'll ever see, including the fantastic golf bit mentioned below.
